Buckwheat, rooibos, and vitex extracts can mitigate adverse effects of xylene on ovarian cells in vitro.
This study examines whether selected functional food and medicinal plants can mitigate the adverse effects of xylene on ovarian cells. The influences of xylene (0, 10, 100, or 1000 ng/mL), buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum), rooibos (Aspalathus linearis), vitex (Vitex agnus-castus), extracts (10 μg/mL each), and a combination of xylene with these plant additives on cultured porcine ovarian granulosa cells are compared. Cell viability, proliferation (PCNA accumulation), apoptosis (accumulation of bax), and release of progesterone (P4) and estradiol (E2) were analyzed by the trypan blue tests, quantitative immunocytochemist...

Effects of benzene on gilts ovarian cell functions alone and in combination with buckwheat, rooibos, and vitex.
Abstract We aimed to examine the influence of benzene and of three dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) plant extracts-buckwheat (Fagopyrum Esculentum), rooibos (Aspalathus linearis), and vitex, (Vitex Agnus-Castus), and the combination of benzene with these three plant extracts on basic ovarian cell functions. Specifically, the study investigated the influence of benzene (0, 10, 100, or 1000 ng/mL) with and without these three plant additives on porcine ovarian granulosa cells cultured during 2 days with and without these additives. Cell viability, proliferation (accumulation of proliferating cell nuclear antigen, P...

Chemical composition and biological activities of the essential oils from Vitex-agnus castus, Ocimum campechianum and Ocimum carnosum.
Abstract The essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation from fresh leaves of Vitex agnus-castus and Ocimum campechianum, and from fresh inflorescences of Ocimum carnosum were analysed by GC-FID and GC-MS. The major components of V. agnus-castus essential oil were identified as 1,8-cineole (47.9%), terpinyl α-acetate (11.6%), sabinene (11.2%) and caryophyllene oxide (9.7%), while in the O. campechianum essential oil were eugenol (72.1%), β-elemene (6.8%), (E)-caryophyllene (6.4%) and bicyclogermacrene (5.2%). Linalool (79.0%), α-epi-cadinol (5.4%), terpinen-4-ol (3.2%) and 1,8-cineole (2.8%) were the m...

Molecules, Vol. 25, Pages 1287: An Overview of the Potential Antineoplastic Effects of Casticin
Seok Ahn Cancer persists as one of the leading causes of deaths worldwide, contributing to approximately 9.6 million deaths per annum in recent years. Despite the numerous advancements in cancer treatment, there is still abundant scope to mitigate recurrence, adverse side effects and toxicities caused by existing pharmaceutical drugs. To achieve this, many phytochemicals from plants and natural products have been tested against cancer cell lines in vivo and in vitro. Likewise, casticin, a flavonoid extracted from the Vitex species, has been isolated from the leaves and seeds of V. trifolia and V. agnus-castus. Castici...

Photocatalytic-degradation of organic dye and removal of heavy metal ions using synthesized SnO2 nanoparticles by Vitex agnus-castus fruit via a green route
Publication date: Available online 26 December 2019Source: Materials LettersAuthor(s): J. Ebrahimian, M. Mohsennia, M. KhayatkashaniAbstractThe SnO2 nanoparticles (NPs) have been successfully synthesized by green synthesis method using Vitex agnus-castus fruit extract. The structural properties of prepared NPs were investigated, indicating homogeneous size distribution of spherically shaped NPs with an average particle size of 8 nm. The photocatalytic activity of the SnO2 NPs for degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) dye in aqueous solution under UV irradiation has been investigated. According the results, the dye degradation e...

Vitex agnus-castus in premenstrual syndrome: A meta-analysis of double-blind randomised controlled trials.
Abstract Although chasteberry (Vitex agnus-castus, VAC) has been studied in several clinical trials and available as medicine for the alleviation of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) symptoms, the efficacy of properly characterised preparations has not been assessed in meta-analyses. The aim of our work was to evaluate the efficacy of VAC in PMS. The meta-analysis was performed following the PRISMA guidelines using the PICOS format, taking into account the CONSORT recommendations. PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and Web of Science were searched for studies on VAC. The analysis ...

Quality Assessment of Medicinal Product and Dietary Supplements Containing Vitex agnus-castus by HPLC Fingerprint and Quantitative Analyses.
In this study, we aimed to evaluate the quality of 11 products sold in Japan (one medicinal product and 10 dietary supplements) containing/claiming to contain chasteberry extract (fruit of Vitex agnus-castus L.) using HPLC fingerprint (15 characteristic peaks), quantitative determination of chemical marker compounds, and a disintegration test. The HPLC profile of the medicinal product was similar to that of the reference standard of V. agnus-castus fruit dry extract obtained from European Directive for the Quality of Medicines (EDQM), whereas the profiles of some dietary supplements showed great variability, such as differ...

Designing an Au/reduced graphene oxide modified carbon paste electrode for the electrochemical quantification of agnuside
This study reported a good linearity in the range of 0.050-250.0 nM and a low detection limit of 0.016 nM. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) for 10.0 nM and 100.0 nM of agnuside were obtained 3.3% and 1.2%, respectively. The sensor was successfully applied to determine agnuside in Vitex agnus castus fruit and urine sample.Graphical abstract (Source: Sensors and Actuators B: Chemical)
