7 Thoughts On Today's Pharma & Biotech News
Seven thoughts: Shire’s purchase of Baxalta is emblematic of the shift in the drug industry. The company that popularized Adderall and help market the diagnosis of ADHD is now focused almost entirely on pricey, rare diseases, with an option on cancer. Vertex and Illumina both released relatively weak financial forecasts ahead of the J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference. This could add to feelings that maybe healthcare investing has peaked, or at least become a realm for stock pickers. Which is exactly what everyone said at this time of year last year. The most dangerous legal drugs are the prescription opioids, now responsible for twice as many deaths as street drugs and also for a secondary epidemic of heroin addiction. The next most dangerous legal drugs are Xanax and other short acting benzodiazepines that potentiate overdoses, cause severe addiction, raise the risk of falls, and worsen cognitive problems. ADHD meds are the most dangerous legal drugs among young people in...

Why Are So Many High Achieving Girls Unhappy?
Happiness is the ultimate currency -- more than wealth, achievements or material possessions -- and we should raise our children, structure our schools and live our lives in a way that maximizes it. That's the message of the book I just finished, Happier by Tal Ben-Shahar, as part of research for my new book on parenting girls ages 16-24. I can't say I ever gave much thought to happiness. Anxiety Ruled This Lawyer's Life. Until He Tried Meditation.
A 500-square-foot Midtown studio in New York City is quietly becoming a temple for the anxious, the overworked and the curious. There are 26 seats. From inside the studio windows, you peer over taxi cabs crowding 5th Avenue below and if you put your nose right up to the glass, you can see the needle of the Empire State building looming large, piercing upwards into the sky. Ben Turshen opened the single door to his meditation studio less than six weeks ago and he has only been teaching the practice for two years. But his following is growing, perhaps because he’s the most unlikely of teachers. “I didn’t learn medit...
