Chronic Low Back Pain in Adults: Evaluation and Management
Am Fam Physician. 2024 Mar;109(3):233-244.ABSTRACTChronic low back pain, defined as lumbar pain persisting for 12 weeks or more, occurs in about 13% of U.S. adults. Patients with chronic low back pain should have a history and physical examination to identify red flags that may indicate serious conditions that warrant immediate intervention or yellow flags (i.e., psychological, environmental, and social factors) that indicate risk of disability. The examination should include an evaluation for radicular symptoms. Routine imaging is not recommended but is indicated when red flags are present, there is a neuromuscular defici...

Natural Products That Protect Against Acetaminophen Hepatotoxicity: A Call for Increased Rigor in Preclinical Studies of Dietary Supplements
J Diet Suppl. 2024 Apr 1:1-18. doi: 10.1080/19390211.2024.2335573. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAcetaminophen (APAP) overdose is one of the most common causes of acute liver injury. The current standard-of-care treatment for APAP hepatotoxicity, N-acetyl-l-cysteine, is highly effective when administered early after overdose, but loses efficacy in later-presenting patients. As a result, there is interest in the identification of new treatments for APAP overdose patients. Natural products are a promising source of new treatments because many are purported to have hepatoprotective effects. In fact, a great deal of research h...

Anthraquinone/activated carbon electrochemical sensor and its application in acetaminophen analysis
Anal Sci. 2024 Apr 1. doi: 10.1007/s44211-024-00537-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAcetaminophen (AC) can inhibit the synthesis of prostaglandins in the body, and has antipyretic and analgesic effects. In this paper, a two-step microwave impregnation method was used to prepare anthraquinone (AQ)-doped carbon composite, which were applied to the surface modification of glassy carbon electrodes (GCE) for the determination of acetaminophen (AC) using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman and Fourier infrared spectroscopy ...

Effects of Acetaminophen in Psychosocial Context
The popular painkiller acetaminophen has psychological side-effects independent of relieving physical pain. I tested three hypotheses suggesting that acetaminophen ’s effects extend into the social realm: (1) Acetaminophen has unforeseen social side-effects, (2) psychosocial variables moderate the effects of acetaminophen on social behavior, and (3) social processes account for the effects of acetaminophen on social affect. In all studies, participants consu med 1000 mg acetaminophen or placebo. To test Hypothesis 1, participants completed measures of empathy (see Mischkowski, Crocker,& Way, 2016; 2019), and a measure of...
