Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on an Emergency Traumatology Service: Experience at a Tertiary Trauma Centre in Spain
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which began as an epidemic centered in Wuhan, China, was declared a public health emergency on January 20, 2020 by the World Health Organization (WHO) and a public health emergency by the United States of America (USA) on January 31, 2020. On March 11, 2020, the WHO declared COVID-19 a pandemic, marking the first pandemic declaration since H1N1 in 2009. The early reported mortality rate, which was between 0.4 and 4.3%, appeared lower than that of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) [1,2].
