The coeliac stomach: A review of the literature

Beyond the small intestine, coeliac disease (CeD) may affect other gastrointestinal tracts, including the stomach. However, various studies have reported conflicting results regarding the association between CeD and gastric manifestations. The aim of this study was to analyze the existing literature on gastric involvement in CeD. A literature search was conducted in bibliographic databases of Embase, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. Studies reporting the association between CeD and gastric disorders were examined in detail and are fully described in the review.

The gluten-free diet (GFD) is the key treatment of celiac disease (CD) and is useful in non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) [1]. GFD is a complex diet, only apparently easy to handle, especially in Mediterranean countries. In fact, it is often necessary to change eating habits, for instance for greater convenience several patients often prefer to consuming industrial gluten-free products (GFPs), which are often lack of nutritional elements such as vitamins, micronutrients and fiber and are rich in lipids.

A 60-year-old male presented to the emergency department with severe anemia (hemoglobin 6.3  g/dL) on routine follow-up. The patient reported no visible gastrointestinal blood loss.
