Circulating tumour DNA alterations as biomarkers for head and neck cancer: a systematic review.

Conclusion: We found that increasing the number of ctDNA genetic methylations resulted in an increase in diagnostic sensitivity accuracy. No studies investigating ctDNA mutations included a control group. A combination of multiple human ctDNA gene alterations with viral ctDNA are promising tools for developing a ctDNA biomarker for HNSCC. PMID: 32223478 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Authors: Li J, Liu X, Nan S, Xu C Abstract Aberrant expression of LINC00520 has been identified in head and neck squamous carcinoma (HNSCC). However, its function in the radiosensitivity of HNSCC remain unclear. Herein, we aimed to define the role LINC00520 in the radiosensitivity of HNSCC and identify the underlying mechanism. Tumour tissues and adjacent normal tissue were collected from HNSCC patients. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in HNSCC tumour were obtained from the cancer genome atlas (TCGA) database. Interactions between LINC00520 and miR-195, homeobox A10 (HOXA10) and miR-195 were evaluated by dual...

Despite the pivotal role that MDT TBs play in oncology care, the implementation of this science remains nebulous and has scope to improve. The need for standardising TB data reporting will enable to better understand HNC trends globally/regionally. Last but not the least, outcomes in HNC patients discussed at TBs and adherence of HNC patients to TB treatment plan is underreported, and analysis of this key area will be an essential cog in HNC patient management. AbstractBackgroundMultidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings or tumor boards (TBs) are fundamental components of cancer treatment. Although their primary function is imp...

In this study, RNA sequence profiles and copy number variation (CNV) data of 506 HNSCC patients were downloaded from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database. Correlation analysis involving alteration of m6A regulatory genes, clinicopathological characteristics, and patient survival was performed using R language. The results suggest that alteration of m6A regulatory genes was correlated with clinical staging. Patients with high expression of ALKBH5, FTO, METTL14, WTAP, YTHDC1, YTHDF1, and YTHDF2 had poor overall survival (OS) than those with low expression. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses showed that AL...

Pan‑cancer analysis of transmembrane protease serine 2 and cathepsin L that mediate cellular SARS‑CoV‑2 infection leading to COVID-19. Int J Oncol. 2020 May 26;: Authors: Katopodis P, Anikin V, Randeva HS, Spandidos DA, Chatha K, Kyrou I, Karteris E Abstract Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) coronavirus‑2 (SARS‑CoV2) is the cause of a new disease (COVID‑19) which has evolved into a pandemic during the first half of 2020. Older age, male sex and certain underlying diseases, including cancer, appear to significantly increase the risk for severe COVID‑19. SARS‑CoV‑2 infection of ...

Improved insight into the molecular mechanisms of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is required to predict prognosis and develop a new therapeutic strategy for targeted genes. The aim of this study is to identify significant genes associated with HNSCC and to further analyze its prognostic significance. In our study, the cancer genome atlas (TCGA) HNSCC database and the gene expression profiles of GSE6631 from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) were used to explore the differential co-expression genes in HNSCC compared with normal tissues. A total of 29 differential co-expression genes were screened out by Weigh...

Abstract Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is a common cancer in China, which was mainly caused by smoking and HPV infection. With the advancement of molecular research, it is meaningful to explore the biomarkers of HNSCC. LINC01207 (small integral membrane protein 31, also known as SMIM31) is a verified oncogene in colorectal adenocarcinoma. Present study aimed to explore the function of LINC01207 in HNSCC cells. Function assays including EdU, colony formation, TUNEL and JC-1 assay revealed that LINC01207 was an oncogene in HNSCC cells. Next, by some mechanism assays including RIP assay and luciferase...

Jinn-Moon Yang Although many studies have shown the association between smoking and the increased incidence and adverse prognosis of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), the mechanisms and pharmaceutical targets involved remain unclear. Here, we integrated gene expression signatures, genetic alterations, and survival analyses to identify prognostic indicators and therapeutic targets for smoking HNSCC patients, and we discovered that the FDA-approved drug varenicline inhibits the target for cancer cell migration/invasion. We first identified 18 smoking-related and prognostic genes for HNSCC by using RNA-Seq...

CONCLUSIONS: Collectively, the studies presented herein suggest that tyrosine 821 of AXL mediates resistance to cetuximab by activation of c-ABL kinase in HNSCC and that targeting of both EGFR and c-ABL leads to a robust anti-tumor response. PMID: 32439698 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The immune checkpoint inhibitor Nivolumab was approved for the treatment of platinum-refractory head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), expanding the treatment options for recurrent or advanced head and neck SCC. However, since temporal bone squamous cell carcinoma (TB-SCC) is very rare cancer, the effectiveness of Nivolumab remains unclear. We investigated the effects of Nivolumab for TB-SCC.

AbstractPurposeOur aim is to determine the impact of the size of ROI in detecting subcentimeter metastatic lymph nodes in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Secondary aim is to determine the impact of the histopathologic grade of the primary cancer on the ADC value of the metastatic nodes.MethodsThe prospective study included 51 patients with histopathologically proven HNSCC at the primary site. Primary site includes oral cavity, oropharynx, larynx, and hypopharynx. ADC values of the lymph nodes were measured on ADC maps by placing two ROIs in the lymph nodes (0.2 cm2 in the center of the node and...
