Lyme Endocarditis as an Emerging Infectious Disease: A Review of the Literature

Lyme endocarditis is extremely rare manifestation of Lyme disease. The clinical manifestations of Lyme endocarditis are non-specific and can be very challenging diagnosis to make when it is the only manifestation of the disease. Until now, only a few cases where reported. Physicians should keep in mind the possibility of borrelial etiology of endocarditis in endemic areas. Appropriate valve tissue sample should be sent for histopathology, culture, and PCR especially in case of endocarditis of unknown origin PCR on heart valve samples is recommended. With more frequent PCR, Borrelia spp. may be increasingly found as a cause of infective endocarditis. Prompt diagnosis and treatment of Lyme carditis may prevent surgical treatment and pacemaker implantations. Due to climate change and global warming Lyme disease is a growing problem. Rising number of Lyme disease cases we can expect and rising number of Lyme endocarditis.

Authors: Ogunwale AO, Oshiname FO, Ajagunna FO Abstract Rape is an endemic criminal sexual behaviour in Nigeria and its perpetration not only violates survivors' dignity but also compromises their health and wellbeing. The rape-related data used in this traditional literature review are derived mainly from small-scale surveys conducted in Nigeria. The deviant behaviour could be perpetrated against both males and females of various socio-demographic characteristics; however, it is young females that are disproportionately more affected. The determinants of rape include factors that are associated with adverse social...

We describe, date, and contextualize the discovery of two hominin crania from Drimolen Main Quarry in South Africa. At ~2.04 million to 1.95 million years old, DNH 152 represents the earliest definitive occurrence of Paranthropus robustus, and DNH 134 represents the earliest occurrence of a cranium with clear affinities to Homo erectus. These crania also show that Homo, Paranthropus, and Australopithecus were contemporaneous at ~2 million years ago. This high taxonomic diversity is also reflected in non-hominin species and provides evidence of endemic evolution and dispersal during a period of climatic variability.

AbstractPurpose of ReviewThe epidemiology, clinical manifestations, and management ofCoxiella burnetti infection in children have not been summarized and updated since 2002.Recent FindingsAerosolization from the birth process of infected mammals accounts for almost all cases. Diagnosis requires a compatible clinical picture and serology that meets the criteria for acute or for persistent focal (chronic) infection. Acute disease is rarely diagnosed in children but it is not clear whether this is because infection is rare, infection is usually asymptomatic, or the diagnosis is usually missed. Fever is the main manifestation ...

Authors: Tavares MG, Tedesco-Silva Junior H, Pestana JOM Abstract Early hospital readmission (EHR), defined as all readmissions within 30 days of initial hospital discharge, is a health care quality measure. It is influenced by the demographic characteristics of the population at risk, the multidisciplinary approach for hospital discharge, the access, coverage, and comprehensiveness of the health care system, and reimbursement policies. EHR is associated with higher morbidity, mortality, and increased health care costs. Monitoring EHR enables the identification of hospital and outpatient healthcare weaknesses and t...

Resveratrol is a bioactive phenol shown to reduce T cell activation through inhibition of mTOR pathways. Recent studies show cell-mediated immune reactions cause structural valve deterioration (SVD) in xenograft valves. Thus, tissue-engineered heart valves (TEHV) with decellularized bovine pericardium have been developed to reduce the immune response. Our study examines whether resveratrol could further decrease the immune rejection against xenogenic bovine pericardium.
