Short-Term Prognosis Value of sST2 for an Unfavorable Outcome in Hypertensive Patients.

Conclusions: sST2 levels were correlated with the risk of adverse CV outcomes in hypertensive patients and may represent a useful prognostic marker in these patients. PMID: 32089758 [PubMed - in process]

This study aimed to assess the hemodynamic effects of concomitant MVS. Of all 73 enrolled patients, 44 patients had undergone concomitant MVS and 29 patients had not. Before LVAD implantation, MVS group had higher pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (p = 0.04). After LVAD implantation, MVS group had higher mean pulmonary artery pressure and cardiac output (CO). During the hemodynamic ramp study, MVS group had steeper CO slopes (0.18 [0.13 0.28] vs. 0.15 [0.08, 0.20] L/min/step; p = 0.04) at incremental LVAD speed and achieved a higher CO at the optimized set speed (5.5 [4.7, 6.9] vs. 4.9 [4.0, 5.7] L/min; p = 0.03). One-yea...

ConclusionIn this pilot trial, GSK2798745 was found to be safe and well ‐tolerated, with a trend toward improved gas transfer. Further investigation is warranted in larger studies to determine whether treatment with TRPV4 antagonists or alternative treatments targeting capillary permeability might be effective to improve lung congestion, pulmonary gas transfer and cli nical status in patients with acute or chronic HF.

Rapid firing from pulmonary veins (PVs) frequently initiates atrial fibrillation, which is a common comorbidity associated with hypertension, heart failure, and valvular disease, i.e., conditions that pathologically increase cardiomyocyte stretch. Autonomic tone plays a crucial role in PV arrhythmogenesis, while its interplay with myocardium stretch remains uncertain. Two-microelectrode technique was used to characterize electrophysiological response of Wistar rat PV to adrenaline at baseline and under mild (150 mg of applied weight that corresponds to a pulmonary venous pressure of 1 mmHg) and moderate (10 g, ∼26 mmHg...

Abstract Sleep is essential to and an integral part of life and when lacking or disrupted, a multitude of mental and physical pathologies ensue, including cardiovascular (CV) disease, which increase health care costs. Several prospective studies and meta-analyses show that insomnia, short (9h) sleep and other sleep disorders are associated with an increased risk of hypertension, metabolic syndrome, myocardial infarction, heart failure, arrhythmias, CV disease risk and/or mortality. The mechanisms by which insomnia and other sleep disorders lead to increased CV risk may encompass inflammatory, immunological, neuro-...

Abstract Salt (NaCl) is a prerequisite for life. Excessive intake of salt, however, is said to increase disease risk including hypertension, arteriosclerosis, heart failure, renal disease, stroke, and cancer. Therefore, considerable research has been expended on the mechanism of sodium handling based on the current concepts of sodium balance. The studies have necessarily relied on relatively short-term experiments and focused on extremes of salt intake in humans. Ultra-long-term salt balance has received far less attention. We performed long-term salt balance studies at intakes of 6, 9, and 12 g/day and found that...

ConclusionsHalf of the patients with ICD ‐10 code for HF did not have EF data available after a visit at specialty care. In particular, the diagnosis of HFpEF seems challenging, reflected as an increase in procedures and laboratory test preceding diagnosis compared with those in HFrEF patients. Also, a large proportion of patients did no t have HF diagnosis, yet they presented elevated NT‐proBNP concentrations and clinical characteristics resembling those of HFpEF patients.
