Elderly patients with cardiovascular disease and patients with dementia in Japan are increasing and are becoming public health problems [1,2]. Accordingly, prevention of and therapeutic intervention for these problems are demanded. Cardiovascular disease and dementia have similar risk factors, one of which is essential fatty acids. Essential fatty acids, n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and n-6 PUFAs are needed by the human body, and intake of these essential fatty acids can help in treating cardiovascular diseases and even improve body composition and mental and physical performance [3].
