Humoral and Cellular Patterns of Early Endothelial Progenitor Cells in Relation to the Cardiovascular Risk in Axial Spondylarthritis.

Conclusions: EPC colony formation is significantly affected in axSpA with particularly low levels in males. EPC-related parameters do not allow predicting disease activity-related or functional parameters nor are they useful for CVR assessment in SpA. PMID: 31143305 [PubMed]

Abstract OBJECTIVE: To examine racial differences of clinical features, medication usage and comorbidities of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) patients in the US. METHODS: 28, 520 patients with AS were identified in the Explorys database. Data were stratified by two rheumatology visits, race, gender, clinical characteristics, medication use and co-morbidities. Data sets were recorded as proportions, which were compared using chisquared test (p

ConclusionsThere is no difference in incidence rate of HZ between Taiwan AS patients and non ‐AS controls. Among AS patients, age and cancer were major risk factors for incidental HZ.

Purpose of review Treat-to-target (T2T) is an emerging management strategy in axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA). The concept was originally based on evidence from other chronic conditions, such as hypertension, diabetes and hypothyroidism, as well as some rheumatic diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and gout. The purpose of this review is to discuss the arguments against and in favour of adopting a T2T strategy in the management of axSpA. Recent findings International groups have recommended a T2T strategy in axSpA. Inactive disease according to the Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Score (ASDAS) has been sugg...

The objectives were to construct a weighted genetic risk score (wGRS) using currently known genome-wide susceptibility SNPs, and evaluate its predictive ability for AS in the Norwegian population-based Nord- Trøndelag Health Study (HUNT). METHODS: AS cases (n=164) and controls (n=49,032) were from the second (1995- 1997) and third (2006-2008) waves of the HUNT study, to which the entire adult population of the northern region of Trøndelag was invited. A wGRS based on 110 SNPs weighted by published odds ratios for AS was constructed, representing each person's carriage of all risk variants. Logistic regres...

CONCLUSIONS: Among CIRD patients prospectively followed-up at rheumatology outpatient clinics, those with AS show higher risk of first CVE. Besides cardiovascular risk factors, such as hypertension, being a man and older as well as having a long disease duration increase the risk of CVE in patients with CIRD. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with RA tended to have lower levels of plasma renin compared to healthy subjects. This finding indicates that the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system might not be directly involved in the process that results in increased cardiovascular events in rheumatoid arthritis. JaraAbstractMetabolic syndrome (MetS) is a cluster of metabolic and cardiovascular (CV) risk factors including obesity and visceral adiposity, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia and hypertension contributing to CV mortality. The interface between the metabolic and immune systems has been of great interest recently. These interactions are regulated through gene...

mb AG Abstract OBJECTIVE: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is associated with increased risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy is a strong precursor for clinical CVD. The aim of our study was to assess whether having AS was associated with increased prevalence of LV hypertrophy. METHODS: Clinical and echocardiographic data from 139 AS patients and 126 age- and sex-matched controls was used. LV mass was calculated according to guidelines and indexed to height2.7. LV hypertrophy was considered present if LV mass index was> 49.2 g/m2.7 in men and> 46.7 g/m2.7 in women. RES...

Abstract OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence and association of renal dysfunction in patients with spondyloarthritis (SpA). METHODS: The ASAS-COMOSPA (Assessment of Spondyloarthritis international Society-COMOrbidities in SPondyloArthritis) was an international study (22 participating countries from 4 continents) investigating comorbidities in SpA. Renal function was assessed based on estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) calculated using the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease equation. SpA characteristics and risk factors for renal impairment were collected. Nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug (NSAID...
