While pain is neither uncommon nor novel, the concept of central pain (CP) has only recently become a prominent concern in the medical literature. CP results from lesions to the central nervous system caused by conditions such as stroke, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, and brain and spinal cord injuries. With the incidence of disability from these conditions increasing dramatically worldwide, it is no surprise that the diagnosis and treatment of CP are of growing interest in the fields of pain management, neurology, neurosurgery, and anesthesiology. However, inconsistent and contradictory reporting has engendered confusion in both clinicians and patients alike regarding the best course of action in CP diagnosis and treatment. Doctors Sergio Canavero and Vincenzo Bonicalzi of the Turin Advanced Neuromodulation Group attempt to eliminate this uncertainty and miscommunication in Central Pain Syndrome: Pathophysiology, Diagnosis, and Management. For this second edition, the authors have completely rewritten and reorganized the chapters to produce a text that truly “sets the standard in the field.” Meant to be a reference for clinicians in pain management, Central Pain is divided neatly into 4 sections: Introduction, Clinical Features and Diagnosis, Treatment, and Pathophysiology.
