Promoting Cardiovascular Health in Early Childhood and Transitions in Childhood through Adolescence: A Workshop Report

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the number one cause of death in developed countries around the world.1 Although the mortality rate from CVD has declined since the middle of the last century, in recent years, this decline has slowed substantially.1 The Framingham Study in adults, the Bogalusa and Muscatine studies in US children, and international studies, such as the Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study, have identified important risk factors for CVD, including hypertension, high low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, obesity, and diabetes.
