The Headache of Hearing Loss

A 69-year-old woman presented to the emergency department with a worsening headache in the setting of a 5-year history of progressive right-sided hearing loss. Noncontrast magnetic resonance imaging (Fig.  1) revealed a 2.8 cm right cerebellopontine angle mass extending from the internal auditory canal with effacement of the fourth ventricle and associated normal pressure hydrocephalus. The patient underwent ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement by neurosurgery, which abated her headache.
