Effect of iron deficiency anemia on HbA1c in diabetic patients at Tikur Anbessa specialized teaching hospital, Addis Ababa Ethiopia

AbstractBackgroundHemoglobin A1C (HbA1c) is the predominant hemoglobin found in HbA1 fractions. A1c assay is the recommended assay for diagnosing diabetes and any condition that changes red cell turnover such as Iron deficiency Anemia (IDA), will lead to spurious A1C results. Therefore, the present study was aimed at determining the effect of IDA on HbA1c in diabetic patients attending Black Lion Specialized Teaching Hospital, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.MethodsA facility based comparative cross sectional study was conducted on 174 diabetic patients (87 with IDA and 87 without IDA) from April to July 2016. Socio demographic data and clinical conditions were collected using structured questionnaire. Venous blood was collected for performing Complete blood count (CBC) using Cell dyn 1800 hematology analyzer; Serum ferritin, performed by COBAS INTEGRA 400/800 Chemistry analyzer and HbA1c tests, performed by COBAS C 111 analyzer. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 21 software. Pearson ’s correlation, chi-square, and independent t-tests were calculated. The data was presented as mean ± SD. AP-value of

BACKGROUND: Patients with (versus without) diabetes mellitus who develop colon cancer are at increased risk of dying within 30 days after surgery. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to identify potential mediators of the effect of diabetes mellitus on all-cause 30-day mortality risk after surgery for colon cancer. DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using the 2013–2015 National Surgical Quality Improvement Program data. SETTING: The study was conducted at various hospitals across the United States (from 435 to 603 hospitals). PATIENTS: Patients who underwent resection for colon canc...

In conclusion, the concept of an epigenetic clock is compelling, but caution should be taken in interpreting associations with age acceleration. Association tests of age acceleration should include age as a covariate. ConclusionsUnder a combination of leflunomide and methotrexate, liver toxicity and, for the first time, thrombotic microangiopathy occurred as side effects. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease may have predisposed for the drug-induced liver toxicity.

AbstractAimLong ‐term outcome data of acute decompensated heart failure (HF) are scarce from India. The aim of the study was to collect in‐hospital and long‐term outcome data of HF patients admitted during 2001–2010 in a tertiary‐care centre in South India. Methods and resultsConsecutive patients admitted with first episode of decompensated HF were part of the registry. Data regarding diagnosis, risk factors, treatment, early (in ‐hospital), and late (5 and 10year) mortality outcomes were captured. During this period, 1502 patients were admitted with first episode of decompensated HF [37.7% of women, mean ag...

Discussion Almost all infants in the first few days of life have some elevation of their bilirubin because of the various physiologic changes they undergo in the transition to extra-uterine life. This is a common problem managed by many different inpatient and outpatient healthcare providers. This hyperbilirubinemia is usually unconjugated and resolves in the first 1-2 weeks of life. However, when it does not resolve, health care providers have 3 general paths to follow when considering a cause: inadequate breast milk intake, an underlying organic cause or breast milk jaundice. Inadequate breastfeeding is not uncommon and...

AbstractIntroductionTo identify predictors of hypoglycemia and five other clinical and economic outcomes among treated patients with type  2 diabetes (T2D) using machine learning and structured data from a large, geographically diverse administrative claims database.MethodsA retrospective cohort study design was applied to Optum Clinformatics claims data indexed on first antidiabetic prescription date. A hypothesis-free, Bayesian machine learning analytics platform (GNS Healthcare REFS ™: Reverse Engineering and Forward Simulation) was used to build ensembles of generalized linear models to predict six outcomes ...

In conclusion, this study suggests that epigenetic age acceleration is significantly associated with lung function in women older than 50 years. We hypothesised that this could be due to menopause. However, we have observed that menopause has minimal effect and therefore there is possibility of other unknown physiological factors at older age in females mediating the epigenetic age acceleration effect on lung function. While, it is still unknown what exactly epigenetic aging from DNA methylation measures, this study suggests it can be utilised as one of the important factors to assess women's lung health in old age. DNA me...
