Predicting oil spill and wild fire damage -- NSF grant

(Virginia Tech) Two Virginia Tech professors have been awarded a National Science Foundation grant to research how computational fluid mechanics -- the use of computers to study movement of fluid -- can improve forecasts of contaminant spread in the ocean, floodwaters, and atmosphere. Complicated simulations determine best methods for oil spill containment, but often take valuable time to render. This research aspires to make this and other contamination simulations faster -- potentially saving money, lives, and the environment.
