Sarcoidosis

Sarcoidosis is a granulomatous disease of unknown origin that can affect any organ system. It may cause respiratory tract, cardiac, ocular, neurologic, and cutaneous manifestations in isolation or in combination. The cause of sarcoidosis is poorly understood, but because exposure to certain environmental antigens in genetically susceptible individuals can lead to granulomatous inflammation mediated by a predominant T helper-1 (Th1) –mediated response, that mechanism is possible. Several disease clusters have been reported in response to environmental events, such as exposures to industrial chemicals or dust such as observed in the World Trade Center (WTC) disaster.
