Implementation of a Multidisciplinary Inpatient Cardiology Service to Improve Heart Failure Outcomes in Guyana

Improved control of communicable diseases and longer life expectancy in developing countries has led to an increased prevalence of chronic diseases.1 Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death world-wide, with over three-quarters of those deaths occurring in low or middle-income countries.2 Heart failure (HF), in particular, is a major cause of mortality in South American countries. This is driven by an increasing prevalence of ischemic cardiomyopathy, dilated cardiomyopathy, and hypertensive heart disease.
