Conclusion Azafrin exhibited cardioprotective effects against myocardial injury via activation of the Nrf2-ARE pathway. As a natural carotenoid antioxidant, this molecule represents a promising cardioprotective adjuvant for the prophylaxis and treatment of ischaemic heart diseases. Graphical abstract
