Occurrence of Lyme disease infection in a non endemic area in Northern Italy.

CONCLUSIONS: Our data reported an high percentage of Lyme Disease infection (19%) in non endemic area. The definition of a multidisciplinary working group and a clinical care pathway allowed a better clinical management of Lyme disease cases treated in Sacco Hospital, Milan. We report about hirudotherapy in a patient with chronic complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) in the right hand. CRPS is a multifactorial disease associated with disabling pain as well as sensory and motor deficits. The optimal therapeutic management is based on personalized multimodal treatment approaches; however, hirudotherapy has not been described in the available literature. To date, we have completed five medicinal leech treatments. Altogether, hirudotherapy led to rapid and substantial relief of symptoms, especially with respect to pain intensity ratings and skin temperature asymmetries. In Addition, the patient&rs...

Conclusion: The decision-to-delivery interval was ≤ 15 min in most women, suggesting that optimised organisation ensures short decision-to-delivery interval independently of the anaesthetic technique performed. As general anaesthesia was associated with worse neonatal outcomes, our results support the early insertion of an epidural catheter whenever there is any potential concern that an emergency caesarean section may be required.

ConclusionHere we show that in twelve clinical cases, the cartilage was observed successfully regenerating and covering the defect region in knees after the intra-articular injection with adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), and the treatment highly improves the symptoms of osteoarthritis. Basically, the adipose-derived MSCs from the patients are cultured and expanded to a specific amount with the optimized stem cell culture medium, the HELENE MEDIUM. After that, the cultured MSCs are directly injected into the injured knee joints of patients. The cartilage has gradually regenerated and been monitored by MRI phot...

Publication date: Available online 23 May 2019Source: Neurochemistry InternationalAuthor(s): Sanjay Kumar, Ajeet Kumar Singh, Manjula VinayakAbstractReactive oxygen species (ROS) have a key role in different etiologies of pain. At sub-cellular level, mitochondria and plasma membranes have been identified as endogenous sources of ROS required for pain generation. NADPH oxidase (NOX) is the main contributor of membrane associated ROS generation. Out of 7 isozymes, NOX1, NOX2 and NOX4 are reported to be associated with nociceptive sensitization. Therefore, it has been hypothesized that specific inhibition of the NOX isozymes ...

Authors: Chmielnicki M, Prokop A, Kandziora F, Pingel A Abstract Demographic development in Germany has led to an aging of the population. Particularly for these patients, osteoporosis-induced vertebral fractures represent a significant decrease in quality of life and level of activity. According to current guidelines, the initial treatment of stable osteoporotic vertebral fractures is conservative management with analgesic, anti-osteoporotic, physical therapy, and orthotic measures as first line options. Personal experience, however, suggests that patients benefit from timely surgical treatment through rapid impro...

Authors: Tan J, Steinhoff M, Bewley A, Gieler U, Rives V Abstract Objective: To characterize rosacea features suitable for identification of high-burden (HB) subjects in clinical practice. Design: Global online survey with subjects recruited using an online panel from the United States, Canada, Italy, United Kingdom, Germany and France. Subjects self-reported a physician's diagnosis of rosacea. Measurements: HB subjects were defined as those with ≥3/4 domains (quality of life, lifestyle adaptation, time trade-off, willingness to pay) greater than the median. Group characteristics were analyzed and multivariate-l...

People with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) who don ’t achieve adequate relief from medication and cognitive-behavioral therapy may benefit from deep transcranial magnetic stimulation (dTMS), astudy inAJP in Advancesuggests.During dTMS treatment, a cap containing coils delivers magnetic pulses to stimulate nerve cells in the brain. The study compared active dTMS treatment with sham (inactive) treatment in 87 people with OCD, with participants in the active treatment group experiencing greater improvement in symptoms at the end of treatment and at a follow-up assessment four weeks later. The study, led by Lior Carm...

This report describes the first case of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) resistant to pentavalent antimonials and also the first use of combinational therapy in Iran. The patient was a two-year old boy, from a non-endemic area for leishmaniasis in northern Iran, presenting with pentavalent antimonial resistant VL. Additional treatment with conventional and liposomal amphotericin B was not effective. A complete cure was achieved following a three week treatment with liposomal amphotericin B (5 mg/kg/day for 5 days, then on the 14th and 21st days), allopurinol (25 mg/day for 5 days, then on the 14th and 21st days) and int...

MarinAbstractSatureja kitaibelii Wierzb. ex Heuff. is endemic species of central Balkan that lives along the Balkan mountains range. The aim of this research was to study the variability of n-alkane profiles of four S. kitaibelii populations growing wild in Serbia in regards to biogeography and chemotaxonomy. Using GC/MS and GC/FID, seventeen n-alkane homologues (C19–C35) were identified. n-Hentriacontane (C31) was dominant in all populat...

The objective is to observe if it could be possible to use the apoptosis test to distinguish different aetiologies in chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CPPS). A prospective study was done, 106 patients, 57 had previously been diagnosed with urological chronic pelvic pain (UCPP)/interstitial cystitis (IC) and 49 patients with gynaecological chronic pelvic pain (GCPP). Neoplastic cells cultures were exposed to the urine of patients with UCPP/IC and patients with GCPP. The urine ability to provoque apoptosis on them was analysed. The apoptosis degree was measured by quantifying the percentage of cells in phase subG0, determined b...
