A Simple Technique for Performing Transesophageal Echocardiography in Patients With Zenker ’s Diverticulum

A 64-year-old man with a previous Zenker ’s diverticulum experienced a transient ischemic attack. Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) was suggested for evaluation of the source of cerebral embolism. Surgical repair of the diverticulum previously had been suggested, but the patient refused surgery. Transthoracic echocardiography and el ectrocardiography findings were normal, but neurology requested patent foramen ovale or left atrial appendage thrombus exclusion. A cautious blind attempt at TEE placement was undertaken with the patient under sedation, but esophageal intubation with the TEE probe (X7-2t; Philips, Best, The Netherla nds) was unsuccessful.
