ASHA Members Are Wowing Us With Leader Ideas —Submit Yours

At the Leader Ideas Lounge at the ASHA Convention, we’re asking members to share their ideas for articles. And their responses are nothing short of amazing! (To be fair, here’s full disclosure: Submitting an article idea enters you in a drawing for an iPad. And those of you at convention still have plenty of time to give us yours at Booth 638 in the Exhibit Hall—but do it by noon tomorrow, when we do the drawing!) Consider these personal stories we’ve been hearing: An SLP diagnosed with Parkinson disease was forced into an unexpected career change and has found opportunity in the challenge. A clinician is returning to school for a PhD after almost 10 years in practice. A clinician in flooded Houston turned to a weighted blanket to help calm her clients. Another with a flooded home from Hurricane Harvey and a pregnancy loss came to convention anyway, and found inspiration from Goldie Hawn’s keynote message. Others have found innovative strategies and methods. A professor started a social interaction group network for students with autism spectrum disorder, and involves speech-language pathology students in the program. A school-based SLP incorporates STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education into treatment. Another has created a core vocabulary specific to students with autism spectrum disorder, using words that resonate with that particular population.
