Joint Position Statement on “Nutraceuticals for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia” of the Italian Society of Diabetology (SID) and of the Italian Society for the Study of Arteriosclerosis (SISA)

Hypercholesterolemia is a major risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. There is a large body of evidence showing that low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol-lowering is associated with a significant cardiovascular risk reduction, both in primary and secondary prevention.Treatment strategies to achieve optimal LDL cholesterol levels include both interventions on lifestyle and pharmacological measures. The initial therapeutic approach to patients with hypercholesterolemia includes a low dietary intake of cholesterol, saturated and "trans" fats and an increase in dietary fiber, associated with physical activity.
