Good response to the primary course and booster dose of hepatitis B vaccine in children with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

We read the article by Minesh Mehta et al. published in Digestive and Liver Disease with great interest [1]. The authors state that paediatric patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and/or non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) are not sufficiently protected against hepatitis B virus (HBV), which is associated with impaired response to the hepatitis B vaccine. In cited study, 72% of patients were considered non-immune to HBV. Based on results of aforementioned study and other literature reports, the authors suggested that obesity is the primary predictor of diminished immunogenic response to HBV-vaccine and other vaccines [2 –4].
