PAINS Update

Myra ChristopherRaising Pain AwarenessPenney Cowan has lived with chronic pain for most of her life and is the Founder of the American Chronic Pain Association. Her advocacy work is peppered with the creation of innovative projects and programs. Perhaps, one of the most powerful of her ideas was establishing September as Pain Awareness Month in 2001.  This September will mark the fifteenth anniversary of Pain Awareness Month. That it has endured over time is remarkable given all the other causes that vie for public attention. However, in my opinion, it has never reached its potential.  It was my privilege to be one of those involved in establishing a Kansas City Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure®; yesterday marked the 20th anniversary of the Kansas City Race. Each year, thousands of breast cancer survivors, their friends, family and others walk and run to raise public awareness and resources to support multiple organizations in our community that advocate for those diagnosed with breast cancer. Yesterday nearly ten thousand people participated in the Race in Kansas City, and there are now Komen Races in more than 140 communities across the country. Chronic pain is worthy of at least as much public attention as is breast cancer, and I think I could make an argument that it is worthy of even more attention. It is estimated that one in eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.  One in three Americans live wi...

Authors: Tumay V, Guner OS Abstract PURPOSE: To evaluate utility and prognostic value of serum CA 19-9 levels in relation to serum CEA levels in the longterm follow up of patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) METHODS: A total of 315 patients with CRC who were treated over a 13-year period were included in this retrospective study. Data on tumor characteristics, CEA and CA 19-9 levels were recorded. Survival analysis was performed with respect to marker status, while receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve was plotted to determine the performance of CEA in predicting survival during follow up with calculation...

This study aimed to evaluate clinicopathological characteristics and long-term oncological outcome with respect to mucinous histology of tumor in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. METHODS: A total of 372 patients who underwent resection surgery due to CRC between March 2006 and March 2019 were included in this retrospective study. Patients were divided into two groups according to degree of mucinous component including mucinous carcinoma group (n=48, ≥50% mucinous component) and non-mucinous carcinoma (n=324,

Authors: Gumus S, Yalav O, Erdogan O, Teke Z Abstract A giant colonic lipoma causing colo-colonic intussusception is extremely rare in adults. A 35-year-old woman visited our emergency room with abdominal pain, abdominal distension, nausea and vomiting. Physical examination showed a painful distended abdomen. Abdominal computed tomography revealed that there was a soft-tissue mass with a fat density of approximately 6 cm in diameter in the distal part of the transverse colon. Since the clinical presentation was that of a mechanical ileus, a laparotomy was performed. An intussusception was detected in the transvers ...

CONCLUSION: The well-established CPU concept could additionally benefit from a superordinate quality control. Adequate quality benchmarking appears to be fundamental for gap analyses and for the establishment of a separate remuneration structure. In this respect the German Society for Cardiology as the certifying institution is required to establish an appropriate mechanism within the framework of regular updates of criteria. Authors: Kamal A, Hosny M, Abd Elwahab A, Shawki Kamal Y, Shehata HS, Hassan A Abstract BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disease of the central nervous system (CNS). Aberrant expression of transcription factor forkhead box P3 (FoxP3) has been suggested to underlie different immunological disorders as FOXP3 expression is essential for T regulatory cells (Tregs) to maintain their suppressive and anti-inflammatory functions and exert immunologic self-tolerance. Interleukin-35 (IL-35) is an important immunosuppressive cytokine that is produced mainly by CD4+ FOXP3+ Tregs. OBJECTIVES: To a...
