Antibacterial Prophylaxis Reduces the Risk of Bacteremia in Patients with Multiple Myeloma and Lymphoma Undergoing High-Dose Chemotherapy and Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation

Bacterial infections are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients undergoing autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT). Whether these patients benefit from antibacterial prophylaxis is unclear and the few studies which addressed this issue are limited by small sample size. At our center, we stopped giving ciprofloxacin in 2012. This change in policy provided us the opportunity to study the potential benefit of prophylaxis in ASCT.
