"I'm not going anywhere," I repeated as I gazed upon my once-triumphant, 4 ’10” yet larger-than-life mother. Despite her lifelong battle with congenital renal failure, she achieved her dreams of traveling the world. She now lay sarcopenic in her Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) bed, a buzzing wound-vac over her abdomen, an arterial line in her right axilla, a dialysi s catheter in her internal jugular vein, a tracheostomy connected to her life-sustaining ventilator. Her single functioning transplanted kidney, gifted by her sister 27 years earlier, had abruptly failed and was followed by a proximal LAD STEMI, hemorrhagic shock, multiple PEA arrests, respiratory f ailure, an emergent laparotomy, and septic shock.
