Depression, Cardiovascular Disease, and Mortality

I read the paper by Krittanawong et al1 with great interest. The authors conducted a meta-analysis on the relationship between depression and the incidence of cardiovascular disease and cardiovascular disease outcomes. Pooled hazard ratios (HR) (95% confidence interval [CI]) of depression for incident stroke, myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, and any cardiovascular diseases were 1.13 (1.00-1.28), 1.28 (1.14-1.45), 1.04 (1.00-1.09), and 1.16 (1.04-1.30), respectively. Regarding mortality risk, pooled HRs (95% CI) of depression for all-cause, cardiovascular disease, and congestive heart failure causes were 1.43 (1.27-1.60), 1.44 (1.27-1.63), and 3.20 (1.29-7.94), respectively.
