This study also did not test dogs in the field, where some breeds might outshine others in hunting parties, search-and-rescue operations, or narcotics searches because of endurance, trainability, or a desire to please humans. In the end, our perception that some dogs are better sniffers than others may be a self-perpetuating prophecy: “In this case, it’s not necessarily that their noses are exceptionally good,” Karlsson says, “but that they’re interested in using their noses to help us complete something that we want them to do.”
