Utilization of ECMO in Peri-Partum and Post-Partum Patients
Purpose: The rate of pregnancy-related deaths in the United States is rising with cardiovascular disease identified as a leading cause of maternal death and morbidity. Recent data shows existing heart conditions as having the highest estimated relative risk associated with adverse maternal pregnancy outcomes and mortality. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a proven life-saving therapy for patients in cardiogenic shock and respiratory failure. There is little data supporting the use of ECMO in pregnant and recently postpartum women.
