Dynamics of Plasmodium species and genotype diversity in adults with asymptomatic infection in Gabon

With 249 million estimated cases and 608,000 deaths worldwide in 2022 [1], malaria remains a public health concern. In endemic areas, individuals can be infected by different Plasmodium species and distinct genotypes of the same species. In serially collected samples, alleles disappearance and reappearance over time was described in asymptomatic infections, raising the question of whether a single blood sample is sufficient to characterize parasite diversity within-host [2].
