Prognostic Performance of Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy for the Clinically Negative Neck in High-Risk Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Even though cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) is one of the most commonly diagnosed malignancies in the United States, there is a lack of prospective data that can inform risk stratification for regional metastasis in the clinically node-negative neck. Regional nodal disease is considered the strongest predictor for recurrence and survival, yet available literature on the rate of occult regional metastases is largely limited to retrospective reviews. Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is standard of care and established as a major prognostic marker for melanoma, yet its role in the management of high risk cSCC has not yet been studied in a prospective fashion.
