Politicization of water, humanitarian response, and health in Syria as a contributor to the ongoing cholera outbreak
Cholera and other infectious diseases can be seen as a barometer of public health, conflict, political instability, and the breakdown of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) infrastructure.   On 5 October 2022, WHO warned that cholera was making an “unwelcome comeback” in many such settings. In Haiti, cases have recently re-emerged just as the country was to be declared cholera-free. The toll of such outbreaks is high: in Yemen, the outbreak beginning in 2016 has caused nearly 4,0 00 deaths among 2.5 million suspected cases, making it the largest outbreak in recorded history. Multivariate analysis of food consumption profiles in crisis settings

Polio cases in Africa linked to new oral vaccine
Last week, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) reported that seven children, six in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and one in neighboring Burundi, had recently been paralyzed by poliovirus strains derived from a vaccine meant to prevent the disease. Unfortunately, such cases are so common—786 were reported last year in Africa, Yemen, and elsewhere—that these seven might not have stood out against the noise. But there was a key difference, GPEI said in a 16 March statement : These are the first cases linked to a new polio vaccine that was painstakingly designed to avoid just this problem...
