Politicization of water, humanitarian response, and health in Syria as a contributor to the ongoing cholera outbreak

Cholera and other infectious diseases can be seen as a barometer of public health, conflict, political instability, and the breakdown of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) infrastructure.   On 5 October 2022, WHO warned that cholera was making an “unwelcome comeback” in many such settings. In Haiti, cases have recently re-emerged just as the country was to be declared cholera-free. The toll of such outbreaks is high: in Yemen, the outbreak beginning in 2016 has caused nearly 4,0 00 deaths among 2.5 million suspected cases, making it the largest outbreak in recorded history.
