A farewell to the x-ray –generating particle accelerator that was my father’s baby
Last week technicians at Argonne National Laboratory began to disassemble a particle accelerator known as the Advanced Photon Source (APS), a ring 1.1 kilometers around that since 1995 has shone as one of the world’s brightest sources of x-rays. It’s hardly the end for the facility, which annually serves nearly 6000 scientists from myriad fields. Within a year, workers will replace the electron accelerator with a new one that will boost the intensity of the APS’s output x-ray beams by a factor of 500. A major scientific facility will be rejuvenated. That’s not unusual. For me personally, however, th...

Tuberculosis Risk Factors Exacerbated by Climate Change

Credit: Getty Images for TB Alliance By Ed HoltBRATISLAVA, May 2 2023 (IPS) While there is no established causal relationship between climate change and tuberculosis (TB), studies have begun to highlight the potential impact its effects could have on the spread of the disease. Undernutrition, HIV/AIDS, overcrowding, poverty, and diabetes have all been identified as TB risk factors that are worsened by climate change. Worryingly, many countries with high burdens of TB, including, for instance, drought-hit Ethiopia, Indonesia, Kenya, and Peru, have suffered...

Mathematical model provides bolt of understanding for lightning-produced X-rays
In the early 2000s, scientists observed lightning discharge producing X-rays comprising high-energy photons — the same type used for medical imaging. Researchers could recreate this phenomenon in the lab, but they could not fully explain how and why… (Source: NSF News)

Why Some Scientists Believe the Future of Medicine Lies in Creating Digital Twins
Within the walls of a 19th-century chapel on the outskirts of Barcelona, a heart starts to slowly contract. This is not a real heart but a virtual copy of one that still pounds inside a patient’s chest. With its 100 million patches of simulated cells, the digital twin—a fully functional simulation of human anatomy— pumps at a leisurely pace as it tests treatments, from drugs to implants. This digital twin pulses within MareNostrum, a supercomputer used by scientists to simulate features of the real world. These simulations can look just like the real thing, but they are vastly more sophisticated than Holl...
