Practice Case
So if you're like me when I was a student, you need a little break from studying sometimes. Since I have a case like this coming up, I figured I would try to post something somewhat educational and try to stimulate a little discussion here. To start off, if any students want to just read the x-rays, tell us what you see and if you feel inclined, list off some angles and what they mean. Then we can move on to what options we have for non-surgical treatment followed by surgical treatment. Once... Practice Case (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Bad Stretch Of Bad Shifts.
Been a rough couple of weeks. Young trauma patient's with bad outcomes, right before prom and graduation. It just seems so "busy" here lately, more than the norm. I just want to thank all the Docs, nurses, ED Techs, lab, Xray, and RT. Even Environmental Services (for turning rooms over so quickly). They too have to deal with the aftermath, and we don't think about them much. My ED has a lot of new nurses, but they've handled things pretty well. And we'll go back to work tomorrow. Malpractice Case: Missed x-ray finding
Case 8: Cough – medmalreviewer Patient seen for cough. Radiology read mentions incidental finding. No follow-up until several years later, patient's incidental finding now developed into inoperable cancer. Patient sues. Doc has died in the meantime, so they're really just suing his estate. Lawsuit dismissed due to statute of limitations. I'm guessing the doc looked at the xray, searching for pneumonia, did not see any, so discharged... How much radiology to know if working in rural or community setting?
If there's no radio in the hospital, how much should one know in order to practice with maximal competency? Chest xray reading + fractures on xray I'm assuming is a given. CTs (stroke)? And ultrasound as a nice bonus skill? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Diagnostic Ultrasound for Rheumatology?
I'm a rheum fellow nearing graduation. Currently being trained (not certified) in diagnostic ultrasound. Has anyone out there found it useful to implement in their practice? Has anyone used this in place of getting xrays on some of your patients? It seems to be the one procedure that rheumatologists can do that has reasonable reimbursement (unlike ultrasound guided joint injections.) Just wanted to get a sense of its clinical utility in day to day practice. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Are Pharmacists ALLOWED to read X-rays?
Are pharmacists trained to read X-rays or would this be considered inappropriate? I mean, if the patient X-ray shows pneumonia I can see a pharmacist double checking we did not misdiagnose the patient before they dose the antibiotics. Misdiagnosis happen ALL the time in medicine, no question. Is reading an X-ray something pharmacists can do and are trained in? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

I need dentist help
So recently I’ve been going to a local dentist that takes Medicaid to get my fillings and root canals done. During one root canal the sx file separated near the root of my tooth. My dentist said I have to visit a specialist/endodontist so they can remove it or file around it. So we went to the refered place which takes Medicaid and got X-rays done but they told us to wait for approval from Medicaid. We called them today and they said I’ve been denied. I don’t understand why when all my other... I NEED DENTIST HELP (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Nurse prevented resident from calling code
Yes you read that correctly. I was in an M&M where we were reviewing a near miss where a child with a retropharyngeal abscess was admitted to the ward instead of going directly to the OT because the radiologist didn't mention anything about it in his report and no one bothered to have a look at the damn thing. Long story short, the senior resident is called to check on the patient in the ward. She has a look at the kid, checks the xray, obviously freaks out and decides to call a code. The... Third spacing and fluids
Wondering how you all approach those complicated patients who are total body overloaded but intravascularly dry, as there doesn't seem to be a great deal of evidence based medicine to guide us. Let me give an example- patient with bad pancreatitis and hypoalbuminemic with an oxygen requirement and maybe a small effusion but otherwise not too terrible an Xray, who is persistently oliguric and has worsening renal function. Common practice seems to be to keep giving fluids with the aim of... Third spacing and fluids (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Current DA anxious about skills in dental school
Hi all. I am a current DA, but I'm not very good at it. To be fair to myself, I have only had a months of actual hands on assisting experience. I was hired as a back-up assistant and mostly just clean rooms. My last DA job I worked only one day a week and we only did composite fillings with one or two other procedures thrown in the entire time I worked there. I can't read x-rays and when I do get put in a room (another assistant is on vacation/out sick/grabbed for a quick recement) I find... Need help/Am I ignorant
View attachment 216232 View attachment 216233 First dentist said, I have great teeth other than a few cosmetic filling and a few fillings in my molars. He said one was a possible crown, but he could put a filling in and shape it. I received a full exam/xrays. When I came back for my cleaning a week later. I ask to talk to the dentist about which filling I should do first. A new dentist came in that I had never seen before and started probing my mouth. She came up with the second bill with...
