Medicine comes in second for me
My entire childhood I wanted to become a doctor. When asked by adults what I wanted to be when I grew up, it was always the same answer. Never did I consider being a fireman or policeman or professional athlete. It was always the same answer: doctor. You see, my father was a small-town, general practice doctor who was somewhat of a legend in town because of his unfailing dedication to his patients. He delivered babies and performed minor surgeries as well as the other things a small-town general practitioner would be required to do. My father even performed his own vasectomy. When teased by many of his friends for being nu...

Healthcare Insurance: America ’s Collective Action Nightmare
By CHARLES SILVER Across the country, ugly confrontations are occurring between Republican lawmakers who pledged to repeal Obamacare and Americans who are afraid of losing their healthcare coverage.  The protesters’ fears are understandable.  The cost of medical services can be devastating.  The chief selling point for Obamacare was that, between the guarantee of coverage on the exchanges and the expansion of Medicaid, the vast majority of Americans would be protected.  And the main difficulty that Republicans face in repealing Obamacare is the widespread concern that tens of millions of people might be tossed off th...

Positive Animal Trial Results for Reversible Male Contraceptive
Researchers at the University of California have published positive results of a trial in rhesus monkeys for Vasalgel, a long-term, reversible, non-hormonal male contraceptive injection. Vasalgel is injected in a similar manner to the no-scalpel vasectomy. In a vasectomy, the vas deferens, a small tube transporting sperm from the testes, is cut and results in sterilization. Vasalgel is instead injected into the lumen of the vas deferens where the gel forms a blockage that does not allow sperm to penetrate. The temporary reduction in sperm count can then be reversed after months or years with a separate injection that dis...

The Women ’s Health Amendment Is Getting An Update. What Should It Include?
The Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires most private health plans in the United States to cover four sets of recommended preventive services without copayments, deductibles, or other out-of-pocket costs. One of those four sets of services focused on women’s preventive care needs. It was called for under the law’s Women’s Health Amendment, developed by an Institute of Medicine panel, and officially incorporated by the federal government into health plans’ requirements in 2012. Taken as a whole, the ACA’s preventive services provision requires coverage of a wide array of sexual and reproductive health services, from...

Why We Need a Male Pill: Enhancing Men ’s Reproductive Autonomy and Unburdening Women’s Contraceptive Responsibility
One of the key tenets of reproductive autonomy is being able to control if, when, and with whom one reproduces. Men’s reproductive autonomy is inhibited by the lack of good contraceptive options available to them. Whereas women have 11 types of contraceptives—including barrier, hormonal, permanent, and long-acting reversible—men only have two types—the male condom, a barrier method, and vasectomy, a permanent method. It is not just the number of methods that is problematic; it is also the lack of long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs). Many men want to maintain their future fertility, thus ru...
