DNA testing forever changed donor conception
DNA testing (and the family secrets it sometimes reveals) has been in the news a lot this year. As Dani Shapiro’s memoir Inheritance made clear, a simple DNA test can upend an identity and dismantle a family story. Those of us working in the field of reproductive medicine know that Shapiro’s story is far from unique. Increasingly often, young (and not so young) adults learn “by accident” that they were donor-conceived. Readers may wonder how this happens. How can parents keep a secret so significant from their children? As a therapist whose practice includes many parents who had children through donor conception, I...

Is the risk of passing on the burdens of mental illness too great of a risk? Does having mental illness mean you can’t be a good parent? Where is the line? Our hosts discuss all this...

45 Administration Provides New HCP Protections | Permits HCPs to Discriminate
by Lori Bruce, MA News broke this week that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is creating a new “Conscience and Religious Freedom Division” (CRFD) in the Office for Civil Rights. This new division will support healthcare workers who refuse to treat patients based on moral or religious convictions: “OCR enforces laws and regulations that protect the free exercise of religion and prohibit discrimination in HHS-funded or conducted programs and activities.” U.S. law defines the exercise of religion as “any exercise of religion, whether or not compelled by, or central to, a system of religious belief....

Strong study shows no link between vasectomy and prostate cancer
In the 1980s, reports began to surface of a potential connection between vasectomies and prostate cancer. This worried men considering vasectomies for birth control, but it was also controversial. Some studies detected an association while others didn’t. Harvard Prostate Knowledge last covered the topic in 2015, after the largest study to that point detected slightly higher risks of high-grade prostate cancer among men who had a vasectomy compared to men who hadn’t. Now that study has been eclipsed by an even larger one. Here’s how the analysis worked For this new effort, researchers with the Mayo Clinic in Rochester...

Eugenics in Tennessee
A recent news story from my home state of Tennessee brings up questions of informed consent, reproductive ethics, eugenics, opioid abuse, and other bioethical issues.  In May, White County judge Sam Benningfield issued an order that allows inmates to have their sentences reduced by thirty days if they consent to sterilization procedures: vasectomies for men and (reversible) Nexplanon implants for women.  Benningfield’s order is his... // Read More » (Source: blog.bioethics.net)

Is the Direct Primary Care Model Dead?
By NIRAN AL-AGBA, MD A recent Medical Economics article asked “Is the DPC model at risk of failing?” The piece focuses on two large DPC-like organizations, Qliance Medical Management of Seattle, Washington and Turntable Health of Las Vegas, NV, working in partnership with Iora Health, which recently closed their doors. Qliance and Turntable were not actually DPC practices by strict definition; they were innovative large business operations providing healthcare services to patients and excluding third party payers. Their idea was commendable, but their closure indicates little cause for concern in regard to the growing ...
