Are vasectomies a risk factor for prostate cancer?
Recently, I realized that patients coming to my office seeking vasectomies required an additional piece in their counseling. What led to this change? Earlier this month a study out of Harvard University suggested an association between vasectomy and lethal prostate cancer. Published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, the researchers found that “men with a history of vasectomy had a 10% increased risk of prostate cancer, with a 19% higher risk of a more lethal form of the disease.”

A perfect thank you note to an oncologist
I got a letter the other day from a local urologist requesting clearance for a patient of mine to have surgery. The doctor wanted to know whether there were any contraindications, from the standpoint of the patient’s cancer, such as bleeding, infection or poor wound healing, which would preclude local anesthesia, bilateral incisions, sharp separation, ligation, and electrocauterization of the vasa deferentia. In other words, could my patient, a 42-year-old survivor of stage IV Hodgkin’s disease, tolerate a vasectomy?

I went to a new GYN this morning and got news that I guess I was expecting. It's not something that my old OB/GYN hadn't recommended to me in the past. I have a lot of pain and heavy bleeding during that time of the month because of fibroids and endometriosis (after two surgeries of removing them and them coming back), so he recommended a hysterectomy.
