Questioning validity of oral sedation for pain procedures
Went for initial consultation for the ol' snip snip this past week. Nurse says, "if you want valium beforehand, only 2 of our docs offer it. It's 5mg 1hr prior and it has to be specifically requested beforehand." Makes me wonder -- if urologists aren't routinely giving benzos for vasectomies and those who do only give 5mg...why are pain docs giving any at all for our procedures? Able to avoid certain procedures?
Hello! I'm a medical student who is pretty much set on going into urology but I have a concern that I'm hoping to address with this post. Due to personal/moral/religious beliefs, I'm against the idea of performing non-medically necessary vasectomies as a form of permanent contraception (even if vasectomies have a chance at reversal, it's not high enough or reliable enough). I'd be happy to refer patients to someone who is willing to perform these (a colleague, co-resident, etc), but I'm... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Thoughts on safety of in office nitrous oxide?
Surgeon popping by to ask a question. I’m considering joining a practice that performs some in office procedures (vasectomies, prostate biopsies, etc) using a patient administered 50% nitrous/50% O2 system. I know similar things have been used in dentists offices forever, but lacking anesthesia training this made me a bit uneasy. Assuming adequate knowledge of contraindications to nitrous, any thoughts on the safety of in office nitrous use? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Procedure-heavy residency programs
I am currently applying to FM resodencies and am looking for those that offer lots of experience in procedures. I want enough numbers to get hospital privileges. I'm interested in doing many vasectomies, colposcopies, tubal ligation (if possible), sports medicine procedures, and anything else I can gain competence in (any surgical procedure would be amazing). Also lots of derm would be great. What programs should I look at? Willing to apply to any state/location. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Choosing where to apply
I'm considering apply to FM. There's a few factors that influence my decision and I'd really appreciate any input you all can offer. I mostly want to do FM in order to be able to do procedures. Ideally, I'd be able to do colposcopy and LEEP, tubal ligation, any type of OR procedures, vasectomies, etc. I think in order to do any procedure or have hospital privileges I need to have a certain number of said procedures under my belt during my time in residency. How do I choose a residency... Choosing where to apply (Source: Student Doctor Network)
