Surely the NEJM could do a better review of delirium tremens
2.5 out of 5 stars Recognition and Management of Withdrawal Delirium (Delirium Tremens). Schuckit MA. N Engl J Med 2014 Nov 27;371:2109-2113. No abstract available This is an amazingly inept paper, even by the traditionally low standards of the New England Journal‘s  “Review Article” section. It was written by a psychiatrist who — on the basis of this piece — seems not to deal with severe alcohol withdrawal or delirium tremens at all. At times, the author does not appear to appreciate the serious nature of DTs and the difficulty of treating the condition adequately. For instance, he states that ...

We Are Our Shadows
The same year the Dalai Lama won the Nobel Peace Prize, 1989, I had my first panic attack. It was my freshman year in college and in the midst of hip-hop, frozen yogurt and scrunchies, I was celebrating independence from my parents for the first time but struggling academically. I had never defined myself as anxious, nervous or worried. Instead I was the girl who doesn't worry about anything. That's how my family had always described me, and I played the part well. As I stood in the emergency room breathing into a bag, doctors urging me to go on medication for my anxiety, I began to question my own sanity. These panic ...

Bacteria may have ability to reduce impact of diazepam on UK river environments
A reaction pathway that could reduce the potentially harmful impact of diazepam and similar chemicals on the UK's freshwater environment has been discovered by researchers. Diazepam -- used to treat anxiety and other similar conditions -- has been detected in rivers across the UK and Europe, having been released from waste water treatment plants. At the levels recorded, it has the potential to produce harmful ecological effects in surface waters, including changing the behavior of fish shoals and their ability to sense danger from predators. Prescription sleeping pills linked to Alzheimer's risk
Conclusion This case control study has suggested that long-term use of benzodiazepines (over six months) may be linked with an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease in older people. These findings are reported to be similar to other previous studies, but add weight to these by showing that risk increases with increasing length of exposure to the drugs, and with those benzodiazepines that remain in the body for longer. The strengths of this study include that it could establish when people started taking benzodiazepines and when they had their diagnosis using medical insurance records, rather than having to ask people to ...

Breakthrough study sheds new light on best medication for children with seizures
(Wayne State University - Office of the Vice President for Research) A recently published clinical study in the Journal of the American Medical Association has answered an urgent question that long puzzled ER pediatricians: Is the drug lorazepam really safer and more effective than diazepam -- the US Food and Drug Administration-approved medication as first line therapy most often used by emergency room doctors to control major epileptic seizures in children?
