Two-pronged immunotherapy approach could treat most blood cancers
The genetically modified immune cells known as CAR-T cells have cured thousands of people with blood cancers, but so far the treatments only work against a few types of the disease. Today in Science Translational Medicine ( STM ), a research team describes a provocative CAR-T strategy to tackle most blood cancers. Working in mice, the scientists sicced the immune cells on a protein common to nearly all cancerous blood cells. Because that protein is also found on normal blood-forming stem cells, the team also replaced those vital cells with ones genetically tweaked to be invisible to the cancer...

Evidence-based clinical practice guideline for the pharmacologic management of acute dental pain in children: A report from the American Dental Association Science and Research Institute, the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine, and the Center for Integrative Global Oral Health at the University of Pennsylvania
CONCLUSIONS AND PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: Nonopioid medications, specifically nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen and naproxen alone or in combination with acetaminophen, are recommended for managing acute dental pain after 1 or more tooth extractions (that is, simple and surgical) and the temporary management of toothache in children (conditional recommendation, very low certainty). According to the US Food and Drug Administration, the use of codeine and tramadol in children for managing acute pain is contraindicated.PMID:37634915 | DOI:10.1016/j.adaj.2023.06.014 (Source: Journal of the American Dental Association)

A Quick Test to Objectify Smell and Taste Dysfunction at Home: a Proof-of-Concept for the Validation of the Chemosensory Perception Test
This study aims at providing proof-of-concept for the validation of the new Chemosensory Perception Test (CPT) developed to remotely assess orthonasal olfactory, retronasal olfactory and gustatory functions in various populations using common North American household items. In the two experiments, a total of 121 participants irrespective of having olfactory and/or gustatory complaints from various causes (COVID-19, sinunasal, post-viral, idiopathic) were tested first, with one/ many of the following tests: 1) a brief chemosensory questionnaire, 2) an olfactory test - Sniffin'Sticks Test (SST) or University of Pennsylvania ...

Among U.S. postdoc applicants, researchers of color often fare worst
Credit: Abscent84/istockphoto, adapted by N. Jessup/ Science Many researchers of color are at a disadvantage when applying for postdoctoral positions. That’s one of the main findings of a new study of 22,098 applications for 769 scientific postdoc positions at nine U.S. universities. The results could inform long-standing efforts to diversify science faculty, as postdoc appointments are a key stage in the academic career pipeline—but notoriously difficult to track or study because they are generally managed at the level of individual principal investigators (PIs) rather than departments or in...

Outcomes of Endoscopic Sinus Surgery for Chronic Rhinosinusitis in Adults with Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia
Conclusion The endoscopic sinus surgery treatment of chronic rhinosinusitis in adults with PCD was associated with improvement in quality of life and endoscopic findings. However, no improvement in olfaction was demonstrated. Studies with a larger number of patients and control groups should help confirm these findings. [...] Thieme Revinter Publicações Ltda. Frances hesselbein: a study in courage and grace
AbstractThe author, an executive coach, and Adjunct Full Professor at the University of Pennsylvania knew and collaborated with Frances Hesselbein for many years. She discusses the qualities that made Frances stand out as a person and as a leader: “Frances stood up for honor, for responsibility, and for choosing the right path. More, Frances called on us to see the truth, maybe especially when it hurt, and to optimistically choose that right path even when the forces that be were insidiously pushing us to choose the easier, quieter, and yes , the cowardly path.” Along with courage, “I believe that what enabled France...
