Hyperthyroidism: Too Much Of A Good Thing
By: Dr. Alan Christianson When someone you know is living with hypothyroidism, it can be tempting to think that if only the doctor would prescribe an extra helping of thyroid hormone, your friend or loved one would feel so much better and would enjoy life more. And in some cases, an extra helping might be in order. In other cases, not so much. Too much thyroid hormone can actually be dangerous, which is why doctors are loathe to bump the levothyroxin dosage up an extra 25 micrograms or so for one of their patients who's still experiencing hypothyroid symptoms. Tests always come first, and there's a good reason for that....

I Am My Mother's Chimera. Chances Are, So Are You.
For years the concept of a "genetic chimera" -- an individual with two genetically distinct cells lines in his/her body -- has sparked the imagination of writers: from Stephen King to Michael Crichton, from CSI to The Office. The idea that an individual could harbor his/her own twin is creepy and intriguing at the same time. Recent advances in DNA sequencing technology have allowed us to probe much deeper into a person's genome, to the point that today scientists believe that chimerism could be far more common than what we originally thought. Chances are, you could be your own twin. But how surprised would you be if I to...

IL37 and autoimmune thyroid disease
Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (HT) and Graves’ disease (GD) differ in clinical presentation and pathophysiology, but both carry thyroid T cells that escape the immune tolerance process and infiltrate the thyroid. Inflammatory cytokines are key in this process. Yan et al. assessed the association of four SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms) of IL37 (a natural suppressor of innate and acquired immunity) with HT and GD in the Chinese Han population. The minor A allele of rs2723176/ rs2723186/rs3811047 and the minor G allele of rs3811046 were found to have a protective influence on GD susceptibility, but there ...

Leaky Gut Syndrome: What You Should Know About Your Gut Bacteria
There's a universe of living organisms in your digestive tract, and the little critters can do a ton for you. Up to 100 trillion cells live in your gut microbiome, forming a world that scientists are still working to understand. 100 trillion cells -- that's enough microbes to make it the highest density natural bacterial ecosystem that we know of. Way more than your compost bin. If all is going well, these organisms live in perfect homeostasis with you, their host. From regulating your immune system to keeping the lining of your gut strong, these organisms can be a part of how you take control of your own biology. Just d...

What is the Remission Rate for Antithyroid Drug Treatment for Hyperthyroidism in Children?
Discussion The thyroid gland secrets two hormones – T4 which is a prohormone and T3 which is the biologically active hormone. Receptors for T3 are found in nearly all body tissues. T3 regulates metabolism and energy production. Organs most affected are the heart, liver and central nervous system as well as growth of the fetus and child. Hyperthyroidism is common with a prevalence rate of about 1-2% for women and 0.2% for men. The most common cause of thyrotoxicosis is Grave’s disease where autoantibodies to thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) exist. These autoantibodies attach to thyroid tissue TSH receptors and...
