Outcomes following minimally invasive approaches vs. open extended lobectomy for non-small cell lung cancer: a propensity-matched analysis of the National Cancer Database
CONCLUSIONS: The results of our study suggest that MIS for extended lobectomy not only is safe and feasible but also is oncologically effective. However, it is imperative to note that these encouraging findings necessitate further validation through prospective studies to ascertain the full scope of benefits and potential risks associated with MIS.PMID:38496690 | PMC:PMC10938095 | DOI:10.21037/tlcr-24-37 (Source: Cell Research)

Surgically induced aortic coarctation in a neonatal porcine model allows for longitudinal assessment of cardiovascular changes
CONCLUSIONS: This model addresses many limitations of prior COA models including neonatal creation at an expected anatomic position with intimal injury and vessel sizes similar to humans.PMID:38488518 | DOI:10.1152/ajpheart.00087.2024 (Source: American Journal of Physiology. Fixation devices made of poly-L-lactide composite for rib reconstruction after thoracotomy
GRAND FIX mesh-type plates and pins (Gunze, Kyoto, Japan) are thin, bioabsorbable fixation devices made of poly-L-lactide (PLLA) composite. These devices are new, and how best to use them in clinical practice ... (Source: Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery)

Spontaneous rupture ‑induced life‑threatening mediastinal mixed germ cell tumor: A case report and therapeutic considerations
Oncol Lett. 2024 Feb 28;27(4):183. doi: 10.3892/ol.2024.14316. eCollection 2024 Apr.ABSTRACTSpontaneous rupture and hemorrhage of mediastinal germ cell tumors is a rare occurrence. In the current report, the case of a 20-year-old male patient who was admitted with chest tightness and dyspnea is presented. An urgent chest CT scan revealed a large tumor in the right anterior mediastinum, measuring ~12 cm in diameter, with associated intratumoral hemorrhage. An emergency thoracotomy was performed to excise the lesion, which revealed that the bleeding was caused by a ruptured tumor. Postoperative pathological findings revealed...

Thoracic lipoblastoma in a 6-year-old African male: a case report
We present the case of a 6-year-old male patient with a right thoracic tumor of months of evolution that was surgically removed by right anterolateral thoracotomy and in which the diagnosis of classic well-differentiated lipoblastoma was histologically confirmed. The patient evolved favorably and was discharged. He is currently under follow-up and without recurrence 1 year after surgery. This is, to our knowledge, the first thoracic lipoblastoma reported in an African pediatric patient. The importance of knowing the clinical, semiological, and intraoperative characteristics of this tumor becomes even more important, as in ...
