Gonorrhea Becoming More Difficult To Treat With Antibiotics
CBS Local — Gonorrhea is becoming more difficult to treat with antibiotics and for some patients it’s become impossible, the World Health Organization (WHO) said. Three forms of bacteria known as “superbugs” that cannot be killed by the best available gonorrhea medicine have been detected in Spain, France and Japan, according to the WHO. “The bacteria that cause gonorrhea are particularly smart. Every time we use a new class of antibiotics to treat the infection, the bacteria evolve to resist them,” said Teodora Wi, a human reproduction specialist for the WHO, in a press release. Analysi...

What Are Options for Acne Treatment?
Discussion Acne vulgaris or acne is a problem of the pilosebaceous follicle. It occurs most prominently where sebaceous glands are abundant especially the face, neck, and upper back. Sebum production increases because of androgens. Keratin and sebum clog the pores of the pilosebaceous unit causing hyperkeratosis (clogged pilosebaceous unit = clogged pores = comedomes). Propionibacterium acnes, a gram-negative anaerobe, multiplies in the sebaceous unit causing an inflammatory reaction resulting in moderate or severe acne. Skin lesions include: Comedomal acne has comedomes White heads = closed comedomes Black heads = open...

When Your Healers Become Your Killers
Since the introduction of penicillin in the middle of the 20th century, antimicrobial treatments have been used not only in human medicine but in veterinary care as well. But their excessive use in livestock (and aquaculture) contaminates the environment and contributes to a rise of resistant microorganisms, posing threats to human health, animal health, food security and people’s livelihoods. Photo: FAOBy Baher KamalROME, Jan 11 2017 (IPS)There is a major though silent global threat to human and animal health, with implications for both food safety and food security and the economic well-being of millions of farming hou...

Personalized antibiotic treatment
A sensor platform that quantifies antibiotics in human blood within minutes has now been developed by researchers. This biosensor system could be used for medical diagnostics in the future, especially for point-of-care testing in doctors ’ practices, on house calls and in pharmacies, as well as in environmental and food safety testing. The researchers focused their study on the antibiotics tetracycline and streptogramin in human blood. (Source: ScienceDaily Headlines)

Drug-Resistant Gonorrhea Strain In Hawaii A First For U.S.
A drug-resistant cluster of gonorrhea infections in Hawaii have health officials worried that the sexually transmitted disease could soon prove untreatable. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced this week that an antibiotic-resistant strain was discovered earlier this year in seven patients in Honolulu. All the individuals ― six men and one woman ― were successfully treated using the CDC-recommended two-drug combination of ceftriaxone and azithromycin. Laboratory tests, however, showed the strain had “decreased susceptibility to ceftriaxone and very high-level resistance to azithromycin,”...

Oh Gee, Another Terrible Consequence Of Antibiotics In Farm Animals
In case you weren’t already convinced that overuse of antibiotics in livestock is a bad, bad, bad idea — a recent study offers a new reason to scale back on them: climate change. An international research team found that dung from cattle treated with a commonly used antibiotic gives off more than double the methane of antibiotic-free dung. Their work was published Thursday in the science journal Proceedings Of the Royal Society B. Scientists tested dung from 10 cows. Five of the cows received a three-day course of broad-spectrum antibiotic tetracycline, and five received none, Phys.org reports. They then measur...
