Give Us Your Input on NIGMS Strategic Planning
In my first post as NIGMS director, I discussed the need to develop a new strategic plan to guide our efforts to ensure that we invest taxpayer money as efficiently and effectively as possible. Since the publication of our previous strategic plan, the Institute has gone through some major programmatic, organizational and staffing changes. We’ve worked to rebalance our portfolio and bolster our commitment to investigator-initiated research. To begin the new strategic planning process, we formed a steering committee and the following subcommittees: Research Funding Policies and Mechanisms Training, Education...

Strategic Planning for Pathology; the Pathology Informatics Summit as a Venue?
In a recent note, I suggested that pathology and pathologists were not spending sufficient time and resources addressing strategic issues in the field (see: It's Time for More Formal Strategic Planning Efforts in Pathology). Shortly thereafter, I encountered an article in the Journal of Pathology Informatics by Lewis A. Hassell and Elizabeth A. Wagar in which they presented "twenty forward looking questions" for pathology (see: Twenty (forward looking) questions). "Forward looking questions" is another way of describing strategic questions. I present below eight of the most interesting questio...

Military Cyberwarriors Destroyed by Teams of Reservists in War Games Exercise
Think about the following question. Which of its major functions is our federal government least able to perform? Developing and managing computer systems is certainly a candidate for the list (see: The Health Insurance Marketplace: A Case Study of Incompetence; Why the Military and the VA Healthcare Systems Are Not Amenable to Change). However, many pundits prophesy that the next major global conflict will have a cyberwar component. What are our chances of success in such conflicts with the military contributing its expertise? Here a story that will provide some insight into the size of our cyberwar problem (see: In...

Until, a Short Film from the Wellcome Trust
The Wellcome Trust is a biomedical research foundation of some size and influence. A fellow from their publicity group recently pointed me to a short film published by their house magazine, Mosaic. To my eyes the noteworthy item here is not the film in and of itself, nor the fact that the Trust has aging and longevity on its agenda, but rather that this organization, which is far and away large enough to be very sober and conservative, is comfortable publishing serious discussions of radical life extension and the prospects for unlimited life spans achieved through future advances in medical science. If you're interested ...

It's Time for More Formal Strategic Planning Efforts in Pathology
This article is a revealing compendium about what the future holds for radiology. A number of topics are addressed in the proceedings including molecular imaging, diagnostic algorithms, information technology in radiology, integrated diagnostics, and health information exchanges. Here's a passage from the article describing population imaging: Population imaging employs computational radiology techniques such as unstructured and structured data mining, image segmentation, and statistical modeling to map and summarise imaging features from large image databases and thus extract meaningful imaging biomarkers. The biomark...

Health IT Innovation Begins Locally
Tue, 7/22/2014 - 4:58pmChad Johnson0 Comments var addthis_config = {ui_click: true,data_track_clickback: true,data_ga_social: true,data_ga_property: UA-317164-6}; Is innovation possible in health IT? This is a common question that is aimed directly at the enormous size of the healthcare industry in the U.S. and the costs associated with enterprise software. Many feel that in a large industry with human lives in the balance real innovation is impossible because the bureaucracy is designed to prevent risk-taking behavior and maintain the status quo. To illustrate the scope: in 2011, according to numbers ...

Elder Justice Roadmap Project identifies elder abuse and calls for action
Supported by the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the Elder Justice Roadmap was developed by harnessing the expertise of hundreds of public and private stakeholders from across the country and by gathering their input. The goal of these expert summits was to identify the most critical priorities and concrete opportunities for greater public and private investment and engagement in elder abuse issues. The Elder Justice Roadmap reflects the knowledge and perspectives of these experts in the field and will be considered by the Elder Justice Coordinating Council and others in...

Canadian Autism Dad Says Thank You Florida Rep. Bill Posey
In Canada we could use more federal politicians speaking honestly and accurately, as  Florida Rep Bill Posey has done in the US,  about Canada's autism crisis  including the realities  facing those with severe autism disorders and their families. Here in Canada we have seen very little national leadership in addressing Canada's autism crisis.  Particularly during the Stephen Harper - Mike Lake era the federal government has expressly refused to engage  in any meaningful way in addressing Canada's autism issues.  In Canada we have relied heavily on American leaders...

Work with the Flow of Life for Business Success
There is one secret to abundant business prosperity that only a handful of successful companies throughout the world seem to know. It is this: Human beings are hardwired to be social, interconnected beings. Enduring success in business depends entirely on working with the flow of human life rather than against it. Too many corporations operate from a fundamental and deep-seated fear of lack, which turns them into forceful, resource-grabbing militaristic machines that leave workers deeply disconnected and discontented. From this mindset arises rampant bullying, high turnover, absenteeism, a disengaged workforce and ultimat...

GAO Says Defense, VA Shouldn’t Have Separate EMRs
The GAO isn’t satisfied with plans the departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs has submitted claiming that separate EMRs will be more affordable and quicker than their original joint plans. The two agencies had claimed that implementing separate, interoperable EMR systems would be a better choice than developing a joint EMR usable by both agencies.  But the GAO says the two have not substantiated their claims that the separate EMRs would save money and time. The GAO report comes after years of wrangling over how to create a joint, integrated EHR. The two agencies have been discussing creating the joint project, ...

Tech in the pharmacy improves outcomes, med safety
by Steve Kessinger "Optimizing patient outcomes through interdisciplinary medication management" is our pharmacy department's purpose. Let me elaborate on our recent transition to fulfill that objective. The implementation of an electronic medical record (EMR) system has profoundly affected efforts to improve medication safety and advance pharmacy practice. Perhaps the most noteworthy endeavor has been the implementation of computerized physician order management (CPOM) functionality. Prior to this project, copies of hand-written medication orders were scanned to the pharmacy department for manual transcription into a p...
