Making AI Models in Healthcare Transparent One Bite at a Time – Regulatory Talk Series
This article is the third in the Healthcare Regulatory Talk series. New data standards announced last December by the Office of the National Coordinator for Healthcare Technology (ONC) are an extraordinarily significant expansion of regulations around health IT and could hijack product roadmaps for years to come. For EHRs faced with the daunting task of revamping platform technology and innovation roadmaps, the “Health Data, Technology, and Interoperability: Certification Program Updates, Algorithm Transparency, and Information Sharing (HTI-1)” final rule is like the elephant in the old proverb: too hard to consume all...

What Should You Think About When Migrating Existing Healthcare Systems and Applications to the Cloud?
Moving is a very daunting task. The longer you live somewhere the more stuff you have to pack up into boxes and then unpack in your new place. And you’ve kept this stuff for so long that you’re attached to it and don’t want to get rid of anything. Moving your organization to a new system is just the same. All of your data and information is stored away in other systems and applications. And while those systems and applications may not be perfect, your staff have used them for so long that they’re used to them and might be resistant to change. Tragically, for both moving in our own lives and moving o...

Automation Drives Optimal Use of Temp Nurses
Staffing has become alarmingly tight in health care, driven by aging and a less healthy population, an aging workforce, bureaucratic demands from payers that disincentivize staff, and the traumas of the COVID-19 crisis and increasing violence against staff. Temps, often traveling long distances, have been making up the difference between supply and demand in staffing. The critical shortage has interfered with well-intentioned regulatory goals. ShiftMed, though, has been taking a sleeker and friendlier direction in temporary staffing. On the institutional side, pressures to reduce staff costs intersect with desperate needs ...

American Lung Association Wants to Keep Smokers Misinformed About the Relative Risks of Different Tobacco Products
Incomments submitted to the FDA in response to the Center for Tobacco Products ' (CTP) draft strategic plan, the American Lung Association expressed its opposition to one of the strategic goals, which was to " inform adults who smoke about the relative risks of tobacco products. " This goal primarily expressed the desire of the CTP to inform smokers that electronic cigarettes are much safer than real cigarettes and therefore may be considered as a safer alternative for smokers who are unable to quit using other cessation methods. The American Lung Association does not approve of this goal, writing: "Remove language from the...
