What is Going on at MLA?
If you haven’t had a chance to check out MLA’s new blog, Full Speed Ahead, then you are missing out on all the latest changes that will be happening within MLA as we move into the future. In the post, MLA’s Culture Revolution, Linda Walton describes  how the MLA has board and staff have spent the past month dreaming big and thinking about what’s possible for the organization. We are looking at the organization as a whole to determine what we are currently doing, what we should be doing and what we shouldn’t be doing.  MLA was founded in 1898, it’s time to take a closer look at how our pro...

Where Is HITECH’s $35 Billion Dollar Investment Going?
On April 16, 2013, we released “REBOOT: Re-examining the Strategies Needed to Successfully Adopt Health IT,” outlining concerns with implementation of the Health Information Technology and Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act. Specifically, we asked: What have the American people gotten for their $35 billion dollar investment? Two years after releasing the white paper, and six years since enactment of the HITECH Act, the question remains. There is inconclusive evidence that the program has achieved its goals of increasing efficiency, reducing costs, and improving the quality of care. We have been candid about the ...

Behind MLA Scenes: Updates
MLA Committees: Once MLA members have applied to be on a committee, MLA sends the President elect the giant committee wish list.  It is a grid like sheet listing every committee and the members’ first, second and third choice.  It also has the committee chairs’ first, second and third choice for members on their committee.  So the President elect looks at this entire thing and assigns people to committees based on their requests AND that of the committee chairs.  As Mark Funk said, it is kind of like “NFL draft done by one person trying to make teams, coaches, and players all happy.” I just got done ass...

The Spoils Of War
There was once a kind and merciful General.  His joy of the study of war could only be matched by his love for the soldiers who trained dutifully beneath him.  Day in and day out, he could be seen in the barracks beside his men.  He was both dogged and forgiving, relentless but affable.  His mind was laser sharp, and his physical agility could match that of any of his much younger recruits. He was a nationalist.  More willing to devote his life to the calling of country than to risk those of the young people who gathered around him.  So his attention to detail was incessant, his expectations fo...

5 tips for future physician leaders
Our health care system needs more physician leaders. Physician-led accountable care organizations have been shown to improve the quality of patient care while reducing overall costs. Physicians, by their nature, tend to be goal-oriented, have the ability to gather and assimilate evidence, and make difficult decisions, but these traits do not always translate naturally into leadership skills. We are trained to make a diagnosis and map out a treatment plan in medical school and residency, but the typical curriculum does not include developing staff, leading teams or strategic planning. One option to learn these skills is to ...

The Nurse's Magic Wand
Since the beginning of this new year, I've been asking some of my colleagues and clients about what's next for them in 2015, and beyond. I ask them in the context of my contention that, if the profession of nursing and the healthcare industry is your professional oyster, how will you find your pearls?Taking this line of thought further, what would you do if you had a magic wand, and you could create whatever nursing career you could imagine? What would it look like? Don't worry about how you would do it; this is solely about dreaming big. What's your pleasure?Nurse Keith's magic wand A Bold Vision of a Nursing Care...

Looking Forward in 2015
As an eternal optimist, I always look forward to the year ahead and forget the bruises of the year that has passed. What innovations can we expect in 2015?In previous posts, I’ve discussed the emergence of FHIR to support standardized query/response APIs for EHRs.  I’ve discussed the “post EHR era”  and the rise of new workflow tools.  I’ve emphasized the importance of social, mobile, analytics and cloud. How is all of this going to come together in 2015?  Let me illustrate three examples from recent discussions with industry leaders.1.  Radiology Clinical Decision Support  - The 2014 ...

An unexpected benefit of inactivated poliovirus vaccine
This study shows that a dose of IPV is more effective than OPV at boosting intestinal immunity in children who have previously been immunized with OPV. Both IPV and OPV should be used together in the polio eradication program. WHO therefore recommends the following vaccine regimens: In all countries using OPV only, at least 1 dose of type 2 IPV should be added to the schedule. In polio-endemic countries and in countries with a high risk for wild poliovirus importation and spread: one OPV birth dose, followed by 3 OPV and at least 1 IPV doses. In countries with high immunization coverage (90-95%) and low wild poliovirus i...

FDA's Strategic Priorities: 2014 - 2018
In an effort by FDA to project its future areas of focus, the agency has put forth a strategic priorities document for 2014 through 2018. The document outlines FDA’s five strategic priorities—regulatory science, globalization, safety and quality, smart regulation, and stewardship—and establishes the agency’s core goals and objectives.   In a related blog post, FDA Commissioner Hamburg points out the agency’s increased roles and responsibilities. Numerous pieces of legislation illustrate her point, including the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act of 2009, the Patient Protection and Affordable ...
