The Uncertainty Bomb
By PAUL KECKLEY I like certainty and routine. I like my daily Tall Dark Roast with no room for cream at 5 am at Starbucks. I like the same restaurants, the same suits and ties and the same TV shows. Holidays throw me off and I get bored quickly when I have down time. For six years, the healthcare industry in the U.S. has been adjusting to its new normal based on the regulatory framework of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). It became routine to discuss the volume to value, accountable care organizations, bundled payments, Medicaid expansion and Healthcare.gov. We were certain they’d be around for years to come. Then came th...

What will the Trump era bring to health IT?
Many organizations have asked me to comment on the impact of the Trump presidency on health care and health care IT.    I served the Bush administration for four years and the Obama administration for six years.   I know that change in Washington happens incrementally.   There is always an evolution, not a revolution, regardless of speechmaking hyperbole. What am I doing in Massachusetts?   I’m staying the course, continuing my focus on social networking for healthcare, mobile, care management analytics, cloud, and security while leaving the strategic plan/budget as is. I have no inside information and no involvemen...

FDA Criticized for Moving Too Slowly
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is a frequent target of Congressional critics, sometimes for good reason. Earlier this year, Congress targeted the FDA after two highly critical reports were issued by the Government Accountability Office (GAO), suggesting that the FDA isn’t properly planning how to keep pace with medical science. One report states that the FDA lacks goals, targets, and time frames for keeping up with scientific advances, while failing to track the money it spends on these efforts. The other report found fault with the FDA’s strategic plan, which is supposed to speed approval of drugs and devices...

Create a Path to ASHA Leadership Via Related Professional Organizations
Have you ever wondered how to become a member of the ASHA Board of Directors … or ASHA president, for that matter? It won’t happen overnight, but you can move step-by-step along the long path to leadership. There are a number of pathways for achieving an ASHA leadership position; one travels through related professional organizations (RPOs). Several RPOs focus on constituents in communication sciences and disorders. These professional groups collaborate with ASHA. Some examples include the National Black Association for Speech-Language and Hearing (NBASLH), Council on Academic Programs in Communication Sciences and Dis...

By The Numbers: Our Progress In Digitizing Health Care
Over the past seven years, the United States has seen a historic health IT transformation, moving from a primarily paper-based health system to one where virtually everyone has a digital footprint of their care because of the dramatic uptake of electronic health records (EHRs). Recent data have helped quantify just how rapidly technology has transformed clinical settings. Today, nearly all hospitals (96 percent) and nearly eight in 10 (78 percent) physicians use certified EHRs. This transformation is the result of 2009’s Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act, when fewer than one in 1...

Liposomes for Medicine: Q & A with President of Taiwan Liposome Company
Liposomes, the microsocopic lipid vesicles that scientists have been making in great variety, are rapidly entering clinical medicine and are expected to improve how many diseases are treated. The Taiwan Liposome Company specializes in developing liposomes to improve how drugs are delivered. This Isn't Working
I haven ' t gotten enough sleep for the past several nights. Why? Because I wake up uncomfortable and can ' t sleep. Maybe its because we slept in a different bed for two weeks at the rental. Or because I haven ' t been to the gym for two weeks because we were away. Or because I floated around in the ocean most days. All I know is everything hurts. And it sucks. However, I have a plan:Take a sleeping pillTake a pain pillFind a really boring book to put me to sleepSo now I will take my great strategic plan and implement it and catch up on some Zzzzssss. I hope (Source: Caroline's Breast Cancer Blog)

On The Foundation Freeway: Entering And Exiting Priority Areas With Caution
All funders, no matter their size, have big dreams and limited resources. I have yet to meet grantmakers—even the largest ones—that think they have sufficient money to tackle the myriad challenges that exist. This is certainly true for the New York State Health Foundation (NYSHealth). With an endowment of close to $300 million, we are usually considered a mid-size foundation. Yet, these dollars pale in comparison with the health and health care needs of a large and diverse state like New York. The state is home to more than 19 million people, including large populations of low-income and elderly people, immigrants, non...
