Superficial RT
Hi, I'm a radiation oncologist and fascinated with dermatology's foray into our world Curious about something - How/why would you bill a simulation (77280) charge every treatment and IGRT (G6001) for every treatment for a superficial lesion? Is there a clinical need? Does the plan change daily? I've treated with EBRT for years. We do one plan and no image guidance (well, we do use our eyes) and the outcomes are excellent. Is there any literature that daily planning and IGRT improve... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Is hem/onc lifestyle comparable to derm?
Obviously one should not pursue either of these fields based on lifestyle, however I often hear about how dermatology has a great lifestyle since it can have a 4 day work week/400k a year/minimal call. However, it seems to me that this setup is also very possible and not uncommon in private practice hem onc. Am I incorrect? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Non-healing wound over an IT pump
I'm looking for some advice on how to handle this case. I have a 76 year old male with a history of numerous low back surgeries. He is fused from L3-S1 and has conservative therapies. I implanted a pump in March. His 10 day post-op visit was unremarkable. 2 weeks after the implant, he fell, sliding off of his bed onto the floor and sustained abrasion to the skin over his pump, well below the incision line. I saw him back for a recheck in early June and he had developed a remarkable... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Is the litigation risk in radiology overstated?
According to this NEJM study from 2011, the annual malpractice rate of radiology is slightly below the average of all specialties and only a few percentage points higher than fields like dermatology. I’ve never personally heard of a radiologist whose career was significantly impacted by litigation in any way. Yet I constantly hear about this as a drawback in rads... Non-ACGME mohs fellowship credentialing?
Hello all, Unfortunately, I did not match into an ACGME approved mohs fellowhsip but a non-ACGME program has accepted me as their new fellow. They have an awesome curriculum and I know I will come out as a great mohs surgeon. My only concern is that I would like to open a general dermatology clinic and treat my own mohs cases. Has anyone heard of issues getting credentialed/reimbursed by insurances that won't accept me as a non-ACGME fellow? Thank you! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Academic Internships Insights for Small Animal Rotating
Hi! Sorry if this discussion has already been posted recently - I've not been keeping up with forums. Just wanted to know if recent graduates of academic internship programs can give a review to the institution in which they did a small animal internship at. I'm a 4th year and looking to go into dermatology residency (unless I fall in love with something else haha) Particularly I'm interested to know if: 1) you were happy(ish)? Were other interns happy? what about... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Best time to take research year?
I'm a current M1 interested in derm. I'm at an allopathic US medical school that unfortunately does not have a home dermatology program so I've been struggling to find research opportunities. I definitely want to take a research year but I don't know when is the best time to take it— after M2 or M3? I've heard from some fellow students that students who are interested in competitive specialties like derm and ortho usually take it after their 2nd year, why is that? I don't really know... Favorite nail nippers
I like straight edge double action. Lately I've been trying the curved double action and I am not a fan. The curved part can cut the skin next to the toe if I am not careful, this doesn't happen with the straight edge. In school we were practically forced to buy a pair from McGill and they are wobbly and rattle some. McKesson nippers are much nicer imo. It is also possible McGill has student editions of lower quality. (Source: Student Doctor Network)
