PE takeover of Derm
Hello friends - I am curious about the current state of VC/PE takeover of Derm and trends for the future. We have seen some incursion of PE-backed “groups” into my field Rads. I have read some articles and it appears Derm is squarely in the targets of private equity. How big a trend is this in Derm and what does it mean for the future of the field. When I was in med school Derm was an extremely competitive match and very competitive. Thx (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Are there any residencies I *certainly* can't get into as a DO?
Or are all of them fair game? I'm a matriculating OMS-1, sorry for the naivety of the question. Am I pretty much excluded from specialties like dermatology and radiology? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Low Step 1 score and Dermatology vs. Internal Medicine
Low step 1 score at 206. No research exp as there has been no time or opportunity for it. Only research was in undergrad college. Is there a shot at residency match with Dermatology or Internal Medicine? How to make the residency application stand out? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Wanted Dermatology, but it's out of reach. What is the best alternative for me?
Hey I've finished medical school in a European country. I can basically choose any speciality other than Dermatology, Ophthalmology and Plastic Surgery. The only problem is that for the past few years I was absolutely dead set on Dermatology and, honestly, there was no other speciality that I enjoyed as much as Derm during my rotations. I would love if anyone could give me some feedback on specialities that might be a fit for me but I'm missing. I'm proceeding to explaining what I love... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Reliability of Compounding Pharmacies
The chief of Endocrinology at my state university medical school has stated he will not send Rxs to any compounding pharmacies because of their alleged substandard dosages for meds. If a patients needs an Rx, he requires that all be “FDA approved products” (i.e. not compounded) and dispensed at “regular retail pharmacies” (no compounding pharmacies). While Urologists, Dermatologists, OB/GYN and HIV physicians will utilize these compounding pharmacies for various injectables, creams and PO... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Learning a 2nd language (French/Spanish)
I have some extra time now, MS3, and have always wanted to learn a second language! For background, I'm interested in a US dermatology residency and spent considerable time building my CV early on, if that matters. I have time before I would apply. I've tried spanish multiple times and lost interest, mainly learning it for the utility. I'm much more interested in french (culture, literature, arts), but I realize might not be as useful applying to a US residency. Should I keep grinding... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Are my goals realistic? If so, how do I optimize my chances?
I’m an incoming M1 student at University of Montreal in Canada. I would absolutely love to complete residency in a big US city, such as LA, SF, or NYC. More specifically, I’d love to get into a psychiatry or dermatology residency in NYC (potentially Columbia or NYU), but I’m wondering if this is even realistic at all, considering the school and country I’m coming from. What do you think? And if it is realistic, what can I do to optimize my chances? Or should I focus my efforts on doing... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Northwestern vs CCLCM
Hello everyone! I think I have narrowed it down to these two programs. I am hoping to practice in the Midwest with an eye to dermatology and being involved in public policy. Northwestern + Closer to home (under 2 hours away) so much more familiarity with area and a close friend may go to law school here + More prestigious rank on PD and USNWR (?) + VERY Strong MBA and other Masters program while still conducting longitudinal research + Concept of ECMH sounds interesting to develop personal... UCSD vs UCLA vs Columbia
I currently live in California. Longterm I think I would like to work in California/west coast. I am not yet decided on a specific specialty; I am really interested in dermatology, but I also really like emergency medicine and global health (esp. addressing health issues in Latin America). UCSD Pros I currently live in the San Diego area and love it; the UCSD campus is beautiful My SO works in San Diego — we would be able to keep living together during med school, and I... Correct my misconception
Question for the pathologists from a dumb dermatologist with a limited understanding of immunohistochemistry: Reading path is obviously very complex and can’t be automated. That being said from my (limited) experience it seems IHC stains are either positive or negative and could be read by a machine with limited AI compared to controls in a standardized way. Could a pathologist not choose the stains needed and get an automated read? Obviously would be bad for path financially but why... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
